It is better to like. Liking is rational. Loving someone is emotional and emotions can complicate things. Very few people get killed by people who like them but I seem to hear of alot of "crimes of passion" ie; husbands killing wives.
Don't let your emotions get the best of you.

it's safer to like your mate as if you love them truely, they will kick you in the head eventually...sorry...just my view.
