No, early mariners mistook the dugong and manatee for mermaids, since females have breasts similar to a woman's. Bear in mind that early sea voyages often took many months or even years, A long time to be without female companionship.

I used to go to Disneyland back when the submarines were first operating (before Nemo!) and real, live mermaids sat on the rocks brushing their hair. I was facinated by them... decided that's what I wanted to be when I grew up. I hope they are real, because I believed as a child... and I'd like to think they are still around.... somewhere....

no the sailers thought they were bc of the manatees from real far away they looked liked people with fins and thats where mermaids were made up from. The sailers swore they saw so called mermaids but all they were was manatees.
