The method of disposing of our dead is sometimes an indication of our expectations about the afterlife. Monistic religions like Hinduism tend to prefer cremation because it reflects their belief that all is one, and we eventually get absorbed back into the oneness. Other religions, like Judaism and Christianity, prefer burrial because it reflects their belief in physical resurrection. Other religions prefer mummification, and there's religious significance to that, too.

It may have something to do with whether or not we expect to have any further use for our bodies ;-)
