We plan on taking him to the vet soon, but I can't tell what the problem is because he nips my fingers when I try to touch his paws.

My dog was doing the same thing. Everyone tells me they can't get it from the grass fertilizer. It could be weeds, grasses, flowers, food, whatever. I have 2 dogs & they are together like twins tied in the middle. One dog has it & the other doesn't.

I talked to a person at the vet's office. She said they would look him over & probably start testing for allergies. Could be very expensive. SOooooooooooo, I thought I would do something first. I gave them both a long, warm bath. Guess what? He quit itching. Last 2-3 days & he started chewing paws & licking them again. Tonight we only washed all the paws in warm, sudsy water & rinsed well. He immediately stopped itching & biting again................I am not going to fertilize their side of the yard any more for one thing.

They will get weekly baths & paws washes in between. Whatever it is we saved a huge vet bill by bathing. He is perfectly happy sleeping in his bed right now.

You don't need to look at the paws. Just get him in a nice bath. You will notice a difference right away after the bath or within an hour. Doesn't hurt to try it.
Good Luck................

EDIT NOTE: Someone above my answer said to use BLEACH on your dog & that his vet told him to.....If you did that to your dog & he licked it, he would die. Would you put BLEACH on anything alive???? That guy is nuts. OR else his vet is. That is totally disgusting. What if some poor person did not understand & poured BLEACH on their dog????

He may have an allergy or he may be bored. Some dogs are allergic to fleas so that could be one cause. It could be from a food allergy. You don't mention where you live but here in the south we have fire ants which give a very painful bite. Only your vet can diagnose the problem.

That's usually a sign of something irritating to the paw, often allergies causes them to itch and become inflammed. He'll need something to stop the itching, and the vet can determine what is causing the problem. Not much you can do at home without knowing for sure what's wrong.

Maybe he is just teasing you cause you are so curious?
Might be a food allergy, might be that he has something caught in his food.. Could be all sorts of things.. If he is biting you, he is either not respecting you so doesn't feel he needs to show you, or he is in pain.. I would muzzle him and take a look.

Have you recently treated your yard for bugs or weeds. He may have stepped in something that is irritating his paws. Could he have walked in broken glass?
