Labs are still puppies until 2 or 3. They mature later than other dogs. Mine is still 1.5 and very exciteable. But the puppyness is very cute in certain situations! I think the more you work on obedience, the sooner they will get more self control.

I have an 18 month old giant schnauzer and we're still waiting for all the "puppy" to get out!

I can tell you from experience that the more exercise they get the calmer they will be. Young pups are like young kids, they need lots of ways to get the excess energy out. I recommend the local dog park. Oh! Be sure the dog has been around other dogs before and has been well socialized. A dog training class somewhere like PetSmart is a great place to begin. Also, be sure to check your dog park rules online before you take the pup, so you can bring all you need and are well-prepared. Late afternoon and weekends will be busiest, so I'd start out mid-day when there are likely to be less dogs. Start with small doses, you know?

Other issues that cause pups to misbehave can have to do with diet, teething, etc. If they're still teething, try ice cubes.

Usually, 3 years is the average. If your dog is super hyper all the time, it probably means you need to go on longer walks and teach it to play fetch to help burn off the excess energy it has. If you can let them swim that helps too.

The one thing that tires out a dog fastest is another dog. See if you can't get your dog into something like a doggie day care and interact with many different dogs at once. Your dog will be more tired and usually more obedient and everyone will be happier.

GOOD LUCK!

Labs officially stay a puppy til they are 2 years old. We have 2 that are 3 years old and they still act puppy-like, but they are growing up.

My lab started to calm down at around 2 years. She's still got plenty of play in her but she's not as "hyper". They mellow with age.

I would go with about 2.5 - 3 years old that way they are out of the "teenage" years and everything. However the more time you spend with your puppy the quicker it will happen, especially if you get it to do things that are very exercising so that it gets tired out.

My black lab is now 10 months old and I am still waiting for her to calm down. She is somewhat better. I just had her spayed....maybe that will help.

it depends on the dog usually as they get older they calm down a bit but some dogs like labs are active dogs and like to run around and go outside but it really depends on the dog cause there are lazy dogs ( like mine) and there are dogs that no matter how old they get they will always like to run around chew on everything and play( like my neighbors dog hes 7 pretty old)
