The British didn't conquer America, they settled here. The British along with the Spanish, Portuguese and French came here to exploit this lands riches If you look around you will see each countries influence and the impact of its culture and language.

The French traded with Native Americans for furs and both cultures learned each others language. It was more useful for the Native Americans to learn French because the French traded with all Native American Nations. I believe that since the French language was a spoken and written, it became dominant and universally accepted for the above reason.

English language didn't really take hold until the French and Indian Wars. This was when the English would pay Native Americans for 'scalps'. To the victor go the spoils and... The language.

And how about the Spanish and the Portuguese, how many Native Americans still speak Toltec, Ulimec or Aztec? Not many... they are now dead languages. Although, there are some Native Americans who still speak and only speak Mayian, most now speak Spanish (Latin American) and/or Portuguese.

So what is my point? My point is English is the universal language of business. You want to succeed in the world internationally? Your chances are better if you can speak and write English. That is a fact.

Check with any linguistic expert and they will confirm that no language is more precise in communicating information than English. Why? Because if the English language doesn't have a word for what is being communicated, it will acquire it and make it part of the language base. Other languages do this but it is the English language that has done it for so long and so successfully.

I don't think the point is only learning to speak English. No that is not the issue here...

The issue is not speaking and or being able to write English, any English. This isn't Mexico or France it isn't England. It is the United State of America and here, the law of the land is written in English (Not the Kings English). And if you want to live here and operate legally here, then you need to speak our language.

Speak any language you want Navajo, Suix, Winnebago, Crow on the reservation were the constitution of the United States protects and guarantees such rights, but off the reservation, expect to speak English because we don't speak anything else.

And as a tax payer, I am not going to pay for illegal or legal students to be taught in another language other than English. I am not going to shop stores that support bilingual advertising because I am not going pay ANY extra in the cost of the goods I purchase to support a language I don't speak. Lowe's, Home Depot and McDonalds I am putting you on notice.

If your talking about the Native Americans.

Yes they were forced to learn English they were also banned from doing their own religous pratices. Even in the late 1800's to early 1900's Native American children were taken away from their parents and taken to Christian schools and were forced to take a "Christian Name" and not use the name they were given by their parents.

You're suggesting that the Mexicans coming to this country are actually acting out a clever plan of conquest through settlement and illegal immigration? Hmmm...
You should watch out, if they figure this out, they might declare war on Mexico...and invade Canada in an attempt to stop all those Mexicans from taking over!!!

Those Americans came here from many different countries and agreed that they were going to form a great Nation where there there would be allegiance to that one nation. They left their cultures behind and started fresh here. Those Americans made the United States the great country that it is today. Go blame the Spanish for your problems but do it from Mexico, please!

The true Americans are the Native American and they do speak English in addition to their native tongue. If they, been the true owners of this land, learned English, all of your must learn it too......

Those who came and settled usually picked up English on their own if they were not from the UK. This was not always an easy process and took many years in areas like Pennsylvania with its large German immigrant population, but it happened.

See I do not understand why we need the government to mandate something that has happened for centuries in this nation with each wave of immigrants.
