Ok I just got a new Chihuahua puppy yesterday. He is 8 weeks old and the runt of the litter. The person I got him from said that he was a mommas boy and always by her side. He would play for a little while with his bros/sis's but then went to be by mom. I have had him for about 24hrs now and in that time, he eats but not alot, he drinks but VERY little he pees everytime he comes out of his crate and has pooped once this morning. He has come out to play a few times today for about 15-20 mins at a time, but the rest of the time he sleeps in his crate. Is this normal?

Puppies should be sleeping pretty much the whole day on an off, waking up to have 'mad moments' (running and play) and to eat and drink. As a tiny breed, Chihuahua puppies will be less active then (for example) a Golden or Labrador Retriever puppy. It will take a week or two for the pup to adjust and accept his new surroundings -- it is all very overwhelming for such a small pup!

A puppy is almost like a baby. The first 6 months, the puppy will sleep a lot. Every once in a while they will come out and run around. They also don't eat a lot... I fed my puppies mostly milk when they are young or some soft meat. Then I gradually move to dog food once they have teeth.

If they puppy does have the appetite to eat and poop normal (not watery), then you have nothing to worry about.

Congratulation on your new puppy =).

this is normal and whaen I sell my pups this is how I tell people to play with tehm about 15 minutes and let sleep for 2-3 hours.
You may want to give him some karo syrup as chis are known for sugar drops and especially the runts. You put a teaspoon to a pint of water. Also have it on hand if you notice him having any type of seizure put some directly on his tongue.
I would suggest taking him to teh vets as soon as possible and make sure he is healthy and if he hasn't he should be started on vaccines and wormings.
Good Luck

I would love to know his weight and maybe I can give you an idea of how big he will get when full grown.

As long as he is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing then he should be fine. He is a baby and will sleep more. He is also adjusting to his new home and being away from mom and his siblings. Best thing to do is to just watch him and if he suddenly stops eating or begins eating even less, then I would say a trip to the vet would be in order.

i think its normal, youve just gotten him and hes new to you and his surroundings,so i think the little guy just has to get aquainted with you and the family. give him time, and he ll come around. an 8 week old puppy will take naps on and off as they are babies yet,as they get older theyll stay up longer. have fun and give him a lot of love and care!

the dog is probably a little overwhelmed right now. hes not used to you and your house. give him time to get more comfortable and see what happens. he also probably misses his mom. you said he was a mommas boy. you would be sad too if someone took you away from your mom when she was all you ever knew. dont worry, it should get better. ;)
