I just went to one. The offered free xrays and consultation. When I went back for the consult, they suggested I spend $4000.00!! Out of pocket! and come 3 days a week for 3 months. Then they kept me in this little room with the doctor for an hour and a half while he pressured me to sign up. Like a used car salesman! This has really made me feel very negative about chiros. anybody have a similar experience?

I agree that there are good ones and bad ones, although it seems like the bad ones outnumber the good ones. The good ones are healthcare professionals that are in business for themselves and the bad ones are business men/women who practice healthcare. Seems like you came upon the later. The one beef I usually have with most chiro's is that they think they can cure EVERYTHING with an adjustment and in the process they can cause harm by not giving a patient proper treatment for injury/illness. They should stick with correcting vertebrae that are out of alignment.

I've never been to a chiropractor, despite having a back problem. I've had a back problem for five years, due to a car accident, and my doctor is one of the top spine specialists in the region.

I asked him what he thought of chiropractors, and he said that they can help some situations, but the problem is that they can also make a problem worse.

Your chiropractor definitely sounds like a guy who's out for money and not to help patients, but I think you will find those in a lot of professions, unfortunately - just last week I overheard a conversation about a dentist who told this mom her kid needed all this major work done (which would even require putting the kid under anesthesia!), and she took her kid to another dentist to double-check. The second dentist told her that her kid needed no such work!

If you have a back problem, I would highly recommend going to a spine specialist first - preferably one who is with a major hospital, if there's one in your area. Even a regular doctor probably won't know enough about this area to help much. In my experience, the best orthopaedic doctors are the ones who work with either college or pro sports teams.

There are good ones, and there are bad ones in every bunch of any kind of professional. If you didn't appreciate the sales plug of this one, call another, be sure to tell them you aren't interested in a sales pitch, that you want treatment for something specific, and see if that works better. I have often found that if I am specific, I tend to get better results from chiros.
