He tasted the vinegar to find out what it was, but he did not drink it because he had told the disciples at the last supper that he would not drink of the fruit of the vine until the day when he would drink it with them in His Father's kingdom. That is in Matthew 26:29. Vinegar is made from the fermentation of wine...especially back then.

The vinegar being offered was a fulfillment of prophecy in Psalm 69:21 which says: "They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

In Matthew 27:34, it states that he tasted of it, but would not drink it. In Mark 15: 36-37 it tells that someone gave him drink, but it doesn't tell that Jesus drank it. In Luke 23:36, once again the vinegar is offered, but no mention is made of what Jesus did in regards to the vinegar. In John 19:29-30, it says that Jesus received the vinegar. That could mean that he tasted it. It doesn't say He drank it.

The Christian Bible is a work of symbolic meaning; it is wide open to your interpretations alone.

Consider the idea was to send a clear message over "eons" and further consider that the events recorded were not necessarily "physical" events.

The vinegar issue could relate a symbolic meaning in that with all Truth there can bitterness, yet, in the pure sense of Truth (Jesus) bitterness need not be experienced as the "Choice is yours" ie, you make of it what it is...

Jesus had a choice to accept bitterness (Vinegar) and he said No. Biterness being how one feels about an event...

The vinegar or sour wine that was offered to Jesus would diminish the pain of the cross somewhat but would also make Him drunk. Jesus wanted to face the ordeal on the cross with His faculties undiminished so He could be the perfect sacrifice for sins and satisfy the wrath of God.

He did this i order to experience pain in all its fullness. Remember He did this so that you and I will not have to ever suffer God's wrath. In those days vinegar mixtures were like the morphine of today.

Jhn 19:29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put [it] upon hyssop, and put [it] to his mouth.
Jhn 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

It was customary to give a potion to intoxicate and help alleviate sufferings ( proverbs 31:6). But Jesus refused it so He could suffer the full penalty for sin, to be sober and in His right mind. What an awesome love is His! He did it for you and me.
