I would consider those people as "control freaks". they want to control every part of the family's lives, so they isolate them from other people so there won't be any kind of outside influence on them. I think it's too bad that the significant other doesn't see this and do something about it. maybe fear, maybe blind love, who knows? but it sure is sad.

Various correct answers. I see no justification of this for children.
However, if a significant other is being hurt, that individual need not stay around the one who is trying to control. People like to blame the controller, but they ignore the responsibility of the controlled as well. If you can't deal with something, leave the relationship. If you don't mind being "controlled," then that's your own view. No one is forced to stay unless he allows himself to be placed in such a situation.

Isolation brings control. You can't control people if they get unfettered access to other people.

Most of the folks who've answered have speculated it as control and they are quite right, but the reason for the control behaviour is born of fear. Fear of loss, fear of others..fear... it really is sad that we base our actions on fear...don't you think so...?

The visible reason for this is possesiveness and control.
The inner reason, the motivation for this control, is fear.

Fear of losing them. I know because I have done this. I was so terrified my loved ones would die or leave me, I wanted to control everything they did. My behavior drove them away. Ironic, eh?
