It depends a lot on where you are....
Some places, people have linked different things with emo kids...some places it's rainbows, others it b&w stipes...other it's checkers...
It's all on the different people...
Where I went to high school...emo kids were all boys who wore really tight pants (that usually couldnt fit over their butts) and were 9 times out of 10 very gay...which might explain the pants...
But where I go to college...emo kids were just expressive and emotional (hence the word EMO) so a lot of people were considered emo...(most of the college is art based)
It's also changing...now emo kids are the ones with long, thined out, straightend, black hair, often with a colored stripe, side, top or bottom (atleast half of the hair is black)...tight pants and jackets...at all times...and listen to "whiney" music, like Fall Out Boys, Dashboard Confessionals...ect (don't get me wrong I have no problem with that music)
Long Story short...it's a label...something that changes...always will change and in the long run really doesnt matter...
They probably do it because they know you don't like it and they are trying to make you upset...
I hope this helps..GOOD LUCK!!!

Emo is a lable that means you have a somewhatgothic/punker style and personality. Some people, like yourself, like the fashion of checkers, and even little skulls, even if they are pink. I do not think that checkerd accesories, or clothing, should officialy be counted for as emo, because having a checkerd purse, may be because you are emo, or because it simply looks cute!! Plus, it also counts what you are wearing with the checkerd purse that may give people the idea that you might be emo. But, you dont seem emo at all.

It was associated with punk. People use to checker their Vans (a brand of shoes) with a black pen back in the '80s where I lived.

That just shows how old you are...to me, and pretty much anyone in their 30's or 40's, black & white checkers represent the ska and punk scene from the 70's & 80's!

Well around here it's called 'scene' and their associated with it because all the scene/emo kids wear them with stripes . . .ew.
I'm not one for labeling people, but labeling styles is a totally different story :)

Cause people like to use labels for everything and everyone. If they feel the need to "label" you as something simply based on what you like? Then they really ought to get a life and do something meaningful instead of having to find something like that to do.

Meh it is all nonsense. All you have to do is smile at the people who are calling you emo, to prove them wrong. Ha ha. Look at my avatar after all.
