Interestingly, the Taliban had put an end to the growing of opium in Afghanistan... People who were caught growing it were executed...on the spot - along with most of their male family members.

The industry has enjoyed a rebirth since Mr. Bush decided to "fight terrorism" there....

Wonder what happened to that "war on terror"?

Oh, I remember.......he decided he wanted the oilfields of Iraq instead.....

The people of Afghanistan would starve to death if not for the opium they sell. The soldiers there realize this and do thier job -but dont go out of their way to assist with small time farmers with a little poppy business on the side. They have a large job to do. We can not expect the soldiers to solve every problem in any one area. If they were aggressive about poppies then they would be busier distributing food to the people before they starve. If and I reiterate "If' there is a civil war in the United States as some are suggesting has already started then why would that surprise you? Years ago the President of the United States of America came on TV and declared a War! This is called the War on Drugs but you know and I know its a government war on the citizens of their own country- if you have ever used a drug -if you smoked one toke on a joint in 1975 then the government is at war with you. To put this in perspective since 1960 more than the entire population of the country has admitted to using one drug or another. This is of course accumlative but the reality is that in that case -they go after us with the money that they collect from the government, that the government gets from us in taxes. So we are paying them to throw us in jail and ruin our lives over a little marijuana!
And at home in the US poeple on here are all worried about conspiracies but dont see the irony here.

Its real easy to sit in your home in the United States of America, with a full belly and a beer beside the computer to judge people of other places by our standards. These pople are POOR their children go hungry ( and i dont mean no chips with the beer) if they cant sell those poppies.Get real we lost the War on Drugs years ago - the police dont even really care except they want to keep the expanded budget and manpower and if they declared a truce in the War on Drugs, the police would lose a lot. Think about how many new police related "teams" there are in the United States.

I appreciate the US military don't get me wrong. It's because of them that I have the freedoms I do. To answer your question from what I understand it's not that simple. The Afghan economy would go into chaos if the opium was stopped. While I don't agree with US imperialism around the world I don't know what in this case what else they could do.

American diplomats are ENCOURAGING alternative crops. Since the "good" guys and the "bad" guys are ALL growing opium, we have to treat the "good" guys diplomatically or nothing gets accomplished.

Do you want us to burn them all out? Not a very good way win friends and influence people.
