My boyfriend is 6'4" and weighs in between 270 and 290 depending on how much he's eating and how much he's exercising.

Here's the situation: About a month ago, he asked me to help him lose weight. It's not all fat though. He's big boned and has a lot of muscle in his arms and legs. It's his middle section that needs help the most. He's got a big belly for a 19, almost 20 year-old.

He tends to overeat quite frequently, but I've had him cut back (he used to be able to eat large steaks, like 24 oz.'s, with a side of potato. He doesn't do that anymore). We started an exercise regiment, 30 mins a day, but he recently got a new job that has taken away some of his time to exercise. How do I help him lose weight if cutting back his portions and exercise aren't working? Is there another diet I could try?

By the way, I love my boyfriend regardless of his weight. I'm just concerned about his health and his future.

Well I think it's very sweet of you to be concerned about your boyfriend- it's show that you care and want to be part of a life changing solution. You should have him go to his doctor (go with him if you can, for some kind of support) and set up a diet plan.

Do everything the doctor says. If you have any questions or concerns, call his doctor when you need to. They get paid other then prescribing pills & giving you shots as well.

I'm glad to hear he's cut back on food and if he can't do this at work, do this at breakfast and dinner. Maybe you could put his food out on a plate, controling what is on there.

Eating smaller portion foods such as side meals can be a great idea. See if you can try this instead of eating everything at once. Say you have a hamburger for lunch & like an apple 1 1/2 - 2 hours later. (I know those two don't really go together..lol)

As for excercise, I think you guys should find an half hour / hour of everyday to walk around the block. During night / evening when the tempature has cooled off would be a great idea so it's not too hot.

DON'T TAKE DIET PILLS. I never took them personally but I've only heard bad things about them.

Also, you don't need to buy those meals they advertise on tv. Those are just expensive. If you just cut down on portions, don't over eat & eat when your bored, you can lose wieght and reach a healthy weight.

Good luck!

Big bones don't make someone fat. 270 is pretty fat, roughly 65 lbs over the medically accepted limit. Unless he's a bodybuilder or something, he doesn't have that much muscle on him. You should approach this more scientifically if you want results:

A 200 lb person who wants to stay at 200 lbs should eat roughly 3000 calories per day. Add to that whatever he usually burns from exercise (look it up online, don't guess by any means! . . . this is a good place to start: http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/jumpsite/calculat.htm ), and subtract 300 to 500 calories to create an energy deficit. And there ya go. He will gradually lose weight. It will help if you can get him to stop drinking soda. Good night!

As a side note, I found this interesting article this morning or last night (I rarely close my browser, so I don't know when really):

If you can get him to pick up some of those habits, I think you'll notice some improvement.
