Do you always wear them? Does it start when you are baptized or married or what? Do they have to be the closest thing to your body... I didn't think so because then a girl would have a lot of trouble wearing a bra...don't have to answer this one because it is personal? And also, what do they symbolize?

Once someone has been to the temple, they wear garments. It is a show of our commitment to the covenants that we made with God. They are supposed to be worn just like underwear. There are different types, like two piece or one piece, so it just depends on what you are comfortable with. I can't stand the one piece ones, so I wear the two piece ones.

The bottoms are long- usually they hit between knee and mid-thigh. The tops are long also, and have short sleeves. They are meant to remind us to be modest in dress, and if your garments are covered, you aren't dressing modest enough.

Bras really aren't so hard to wear with them. Some people wear them under the garment top, but they can also be worn over. It takes a few days to get used to wearing them, but it really was no big deal.

To most people, they really are a funny thing. They don't understand what they mean to us, and can't understand why we would want to wear them. It is a personal choice, and one that is very important to most of us.

Thank you for asking your question with respect. It really is a sacred thing to us, and one that I find hard to take when someone makes fun of it.

It really is underwear, so to me, it's a personal thing. I don't think it's nice to ask people what underwear they wear, or why they wear them. It's a personal choice, like boxers or breifs.

When I was on my mission, I had an investigator who asked about the temple garment.... my companion and I explained that they symbolize sacred covenants made in the temple and are therefore sacred to us, that they're worn as underwear. I showed him where the hemlines were on my garments (traced a line near the bottom of my thigh, around my arms near my shoulders, and kinda showed him where the neckline was)....

Then he asked to see them. I told him that it was my underwear, and that I wasn't comfortable bringing my underwear to an appointment to show him (in front of his wife and children??!?).

To answer your question, yes, I always wear mine- unless I'm going swimming or in the shower or "with" my husband. I received them when I was 21, preparing to go on my mission. I went to the temple and made the covenants that are associated with them, and I've worn them ever since. Yes, I wear a bra over them. As Miranda J said, it is kinda funny feeling for the first day or so, but after that, it's fine. They come in a couple different styles- some are one-piece, some are 2-piece, some are more simple with a plain cut, others are more form-fitting.... But they all cover basically the same area of the body, they all symbolize the same things.

Regarding the symbolism,... there's not much I can tell you. The covenants have reference to holding the body sacred, to staying chaste, to being obedient to God's commands..

Mormons wear the garment after recieving their endowments, or covenants made in the temple. To a Mormon the only ceremony that carries more weight is the sealing (or temple marriage) to their spouse. The symbology sewn into the garment over the breasts, navel, and knee each have scriptural meaning, (i.e. "health in the navel", and "every knee shall bow"). It is worn closest to the skin to remind them of their covenants to remain chaste and clean. The bra question is often debated (over or under) and is often left to personal choice.

The "protective powers" of the garment, often touted, are not actually doctrine and more legend. Usually someone keeping their covenants to protect themselves and remain clean make for a safer life and so stories of protection usually are a result of smart living.

I don't believe in the Mormon dogma any more but don't find the garment any stranger than people who wear the weapon of Christ's death around their neck.

Like members of many religious faiths, Latter-day Saints wear religious clothing. But members of other faiths — typically those involved in permanent pastoral ministries or religious services — usually wear religious garments as outer ceremonial vestments or symbols of recognition. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, garments are worn beneath street clothing as a personal and private reminder of commitments to God made in the temple.

Garments are considered sacred by Church members and are not regarded as a topic for casual conversation.

earliest age would be 19 or 21, when able to serve a full-time mission for the LDS church.

I asked an LDS this once. She said after certain initiations you wear them its just simple white stuff. It's a reminder mainly. It was an interesting conversation.

You get them when you get your edowments in the temple. They symbolize what you learned in the temple. And they are very comfortable.

They are ridiculous looking. I think it is a last measure to stop people from having premarital sex. (and a way to squeeze out another penny)

Sacred garmnets. I find that very amusing.

If you haven't seen them, there is a pic on this page.
