Yes, Burn Surgery is a subspecialty of Plastic Surgery. Acute burn care would be for Burn Surgeons while reconstructive burn surgery would be for PLastic Surgeons. Training is a requirement for completing a plastic surgery program so you may take a rotation on such unit. To be a Burn Surgeon, obtain a primary medical degree, take internship and attend residency program in General Surgery, attend fellowship or specialized training in Burn as the subspecialty. The length would depend on your location so just make your rough calculation.

Typically, burn surgeons go through a general surgery residency, not plastics.

This is because as a general surgeon, and since burn patients typically have a lot of other trauma, he/she can take care of the whole patient.
