I want to make a smoothie reaaaally bad. I think its the whole craving thing. I want to make a strawberry-banana smoothie or blueberry smoothie. Just like milk, yogurt, vanilla, banana, and some fruit - well everyone knows you should use a blender, but can I use a hand mixer instead? I dont have either, but I know cheap hand mixers are only about 5 dollars.

I'm sure you could use a hand mixer, but if you don't have a blender, why not invest another $10 and buy one? It will come in handy in case you have another craving later.

You could try a hand mixer, but I think because of the ice in the recipe the mixture is going to fly all over the place. For just a few dollars more you can get a blender....I'd recommend that - lot less mess!
Have fun!

I use a hand mixer all the time, because I don't feel like cleaning the blender most of the time. It works well and is not a big mess to clean.

it's going to be harder to mix fruits up into a smoothie with a hand mixer than a blender

you sure can. just add the solids(fruits) a lil at a time so you don't gunk up the blade/s

also check at your local goodwill/salvation army
they get a lot of appliances like mixers, blenders, bread makers that they sell dirt cheap. all work too

The problem you are going to have is chopping up the ice. That is kind of the core of the smoothe.

The solution:
Put your ice cubes in a dish towel and give it a couple of good whacks on the floor. Voila... chipped ice...

No,Because you have to crush ice cubes or ice cream, and most hand mixers don't have enough power.
