I was just wondering if anyone owns one of these types of dogs and if they can tell me if they have a lot of health problems? I have heard that they are the dogs with the most health concerns, is this correct? Has anyone else heard of this? I'm really interested in purschasing one and would just like more info on them?

MOST of these answers are incorrect.
I have had shar-pei for 20 years .They have no more problems than any other breed IF BRED PROPERLY.

Find a good REPUTABLE BREEDER AND research.
Also go to bonafido.org for more information.

Ears are never cropped, wrinkles never have to be cleaned, they have no more skin problems than any other breed.Yes, they can still have eye problems called entropion (rolling in of the eyelids)
The worst problem on the eyes is VETS,they think ALL shar-pei need eye surgery, not true at all.

I've never owned a shar pei or known anyone personally that did but being a vet tech at an animal hospital, I've met quite a few and they've all been the same - aggressive! Most aren't aggressive towards their owners and with extensive training, I'm sure you can tame their hot-tempered ways but I think this breed will always have some sort of aggression against something or someone.

They do have a lot of health concerns.

Make sure you research any breeder very carefully. Go to one that is a member of the Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America http://www.cspca.com/ and does the appropriate health testing.

my family had them and my brother still does. I've never heard they have the most problems, but they have some. they have skin problems about like any other dog, but what gets tricky is the wrinkles. some need to have the wrinkles near their eyes stapled back to avoid obstruction or infection. my brother's dog's ears were cropped badly, and has bad hearing due to constant infections. find a vet with experience and you should be okay.

yes, i have one. The types of problems these dogs have are... ear buildup- I use q-tips to clean out my dogs ears, they have eyes problems- I had to get my dog eye surgery for both eyes, wrinkles- just make sure there clean. My dog has very few wrinkles, he is lazy now he is only 2 years old. Hope this helps:) they are really good dogs though. Mine is a lover.

All I know is their wrinkly skin can be a problem if you don't keep them clean.

But the older they get, the less wrinkles they have.
