I'm a distance runner and I'm looking to cross train by biking.

I know nothing about biking, nothing at all. So I need to know what type of bike to look at, and if I need any other equipment and what to look for, like helmet, and shoes, etc etc.
I would want to bike between ground, and gravel. I guess I would bike up to 50 miles at a time, ( I usually run around 15 miles at a stretch and about 32 miles in a week)
Any advice would be appreciated.

I would find a well regarded shop in your area and start there. From what you describe, you are a rather serious athlete and should definitely get support from other serious athletes. Because you run, it would be a good idea to find someone who caters to the triathlon or multisport community.

Off the top of my head, I think you would be well served by a road bike. Do not get a mountain bike or hybrid. Don't let them tell you that a hybrid is the most versatile bike. For the riding you describe, look at road racing bicycles first. I happen to think that Cannondale has some great road values right now.
