It is "shall", because it is a promise from God, meaning this will happen, not just this is what ought to happen. And it is not a life in the sense we know it, it is spiritually alive forever. Because the alternative is eternal spiritual torture and seperation from all things good.

But better is the verse that comes next: God sent his Son into the world, not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

But yes, just one key verse doesn't make or break my theology; I agree that it takes more than believing - so does Paul: he says that even demons (as in, evil spirits) believe in God - and SHUDDER. But are they saved? Of course not.

I think it's an unfair statement. There are many people who will live and die without ever hearing it. What about them? It gives the impression that it was written at a time when the population was unaware of just how huge the world is.

All it means is you have to be baptized. Read the entire chapter. Verse 21 says you have to follow the truth.

You have to be baptized and follow Gods laws, 10 commandments ect. The verse only means that if you are not baptised then you arent guaranteed anything.

You have to be baptized so you can be tested as a human being to follow what Jesus taught.

Just to believe in that verse and getting baptized means nothing. Its the first step of thousands.

It says if you believe, you will not perish (note: a "parish" is a type of county in Louisiana). Doesn't say anything about not believing.

Besides, why are you quoting Bible verses to people who don't believe in God? Do you seriously believe the Bible means anything to someone who isn't a Christian?

The word is "perish." The word is "everlasting."

Anyway...

I personally don't agree, particularly with the larger message. There's no way that Jesus is such an ego-fiend that He'd demand that we believe in him. If you love God, you would never describe Him in such as way that he's making demands that you believe in Him or worship Him. That's a perverted view of God. In fact, it's a hateful view of God.

that is not john 3:16.

John 3:16
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

I got a message for you - just believing will NOT get you everlasting life - there is a WHOLE Bible attached to John 3:16 - and if you believe that simply believing in God is going to save - study your Bible again.

Isn't that only the 2nd half of the passage, I beieve the first half of it in the NIV bible reads: For God so loved the world, he gave his only Son.

unfortunatly at the moment, I only have the NLT version to hand, and this is worded quite differently, the NIS version is one of the easiest to read and understand as intended.

SHOULD not shall

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

in John 3 it also says in that same conversation:
John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Salvation is in Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
