I have Windows Vista installed. I never activated it yet because I borrowed this copy from a friend. I've been doing the slgmr -rearm but I used all 8 up already. Someone told me I could reinstall Windows safely and get more time. Is that true and if so, will I lose any files or have any problems?

yes, it's true. you can get more time by reinstalling windows, BUT, you WILL lose all your files, so i suggest u to save all ur files into a cd or something before u reinstall it.

Rather than reformatting and reinstalling Windows every 30 days, why not just use Ubuntu instead?

You can't use the upgrade option, as the product activation files will still be on the system. You'd have to do clean install to get another 30 days.

Microsoft is too intelligent to allow you to pull off what you are trying to pull off.
