Reading is one thing. But reading without knowing what you're reading, is not helping you at all. Why do you read? Is it to gain an understanding to some degree so you can go to battle with the Christians, using their own book to club them? Or, are you searching for truth? If you go through the Bible three times and still have no idea what it means, I think you are reading with the wrong purpose. Below is a small portion out of the Bible for an example. This passage is relevant to your question because it applies to all new Christians who recognize they need understanding of what they read. It's an age old custom in all walks of life - learn from those before you.

Eph. 4:
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

I totally understand your aggravation. Because we don’t believe they assume we have never heard of the great wondrous bible. Once we pick it up we will be engulfed in the holy spirit and question no more. It’s all a load of crap. I think what a lot people don’t realize is that a lot of agnostic/atheists have studied MORE then the average Christian. I love learning about religion. I have read and researched thinking maybe I was missing something that everyone else had found, but then I realized people only see what they want. They want to go to heaven. Who cares about everything else? There needs to be someone who loves them for the crappy ordinary person they are and is willing to accept them no matter what.
Most people aren’t born nonbelievers. They have opened their eyes and seen religion for the false comfort it is. Notice how a group of atheist can usually talk in depth about the information of the bible and Christianity, while theists use old Sunday school stories to back up their point of view. They like to throw around verses not even taking into account the one right next to it saying to beat your child or some other horrible thing. I can’t stand ignorant Christians.

specific, many non-believers are very acquainted with the Bible, no longer all are. some have switched over purely by examining the Bible or having it informed to them, many have not.. I even have continually been a believer yet no longer a Biblical student, and nonetheless am no longer yet (With all due understand) some issues interior the previous testomony are somewhat strange and not what I affiliate with 'good' human beings. If somebody does not have self assurance, that can't be defined and must be there it may't be compelled on you, there is not any thank you to truly comprehend some issues interior the Bible. no person ought to attempt and tension God, the Bible, Jesus, and so on on each physique. in case you do not have self assurance, it somewhat is one ingredient to wish for you it somewhat is yet another to tension it down your throat, that doesn't artwork in any respect on just about each physique. i comprehend people who evangelize disagree with me, yet it somewhat is how I see it.

"A thorough reading and understanding of the Bible is the surest path to atheism” ~ Donald Morgan

It has been my observation that 80% of atheists know more about the bible than 80% of christians do.

It has also been my observation that 80% of atheists know more about the history of christianity than about 99% of christians do.

The people who assume atheists never read the bible likely never read it themselves.

It would seem reasonable that one wouldn't read something they have no interest in. Of course, I'm sure some of the really rabid atheists read it simply for ammunition. Very sad if someone would read the bible just to bash and troll in YA, huh? Waste of life.

This has been one of my strongest arguments against Abrahamic religions. My personal favorite was when we studied the Titans and the ancient Greek gods in school, we were taught that these were not "true" gods because they were so cruel and vengeful. Yet, if you read the OT, that god treats man as his very own unfavored pets.

"There is a difference between reading the Bible three times and studying it for forty years."

Yes. Someone, finally, understood in one of those situations.

I know some Atheists who know more about the bible than most Christians. It's a common assumption that because we deny God, we've never tried to understand the Theist side. I myself know quite a bit about the Bible, suggesting that I've read it not because (as one Christian tried to tell me) I secretly believe in God and am using Atheism as a "way out" of feeling guilty for my sins, but because it's good to have background information and a reason as to why you don't believe it.
