You always have to wait Like if you have an infection they tell you to wait and they never heal your teeth properly

My dentist gave me two fillings and now hot and cold food kill my teeth. how does that work?

Yes, it is possible you need to wait sometimes to get rid of the infections first with taking antibiotics, if you don`t want your dentist to help you spread the infection further to the tooth cavity or nerve...
the fastest possible treatment and the possible last one for treating the tooth pain is extraction of the tooth, but I prefer to "fight" for my own tooth until it is possible and to not have a "false" tooth so soon yet!
So it is really up to you and your dentist what treatment you have!
There can be a good dentist out there too, who can very easily explain what and why is happening if you ask!
