I'm 13 years old, and my eyesight is terrible (-5.00 for my left eye and -5.75 for my right and it's NOT heriditary). I used to do several things that put strain on my eyes... I wear glasses already obviously, and now have to limit myself to about 100 mins a day on anything that strains the eye. I wanted to know if there's a healthy, natural way to stop my eyes from getting any worse, and perhaps, even make them get better? I already know that perfect vision is 20/20, but what is the worst it can possibly get to?

your nearsightedness definitely is hereditary, even if your parents are not nearsighted. whether you are nearsighted or not has to do with the shape of your cornea and the axial length of your eye, both of which are factros influenced by genetics. its not like you "read too much" or strained your eyes to somehow get to -5.75. it was out of your control...hereditary.

no, there is no good, reliable way to make your eyesight better or stop it from getting worse. odds are if you are only 13 and you are -5.00 and -5.75, that you are going to continue to get increasingly more nearsighted into your 20's no matter what you do. as another poster suggested gas permeables may be an option. there is some promise in ortho-k:

but for the most part you should expect to get a little worse before its all over with. anyone advertising any "natural" way to get better vision is pretty much full of crap lol

its no big deal. get regular appointments and trust your eye doctor! they have your best interest in mind...

Your eyes will more than likely progress naturally in prescription/power. Most nearsighted people get a little more nearsighted through their early 20's. Your prescription should stabilize about then until you're in your lower 40's.

There are a few schools of thought on the progression of nearsightedness, even between doctors. Some believe there's nothing you can do about it. Some think you can do "eye exercises" and stabilize, if not improve your eyes a little. And some think that under-powering your contacts a little will stabilize your vision, leaving you a little bit blurry in the distance on purpose.

Personally, I, as well as the majority of other optometrists, believe there is nothing you can do about the progression of your prescription. The only contacts that have been proven to reduce the amount of myopic progression are hard contacts, or RGP's. Other than that, getting into eye exercises, herbs and minerals, and Scientology to reduce your nearsightedness is pure voodoo "science."

Keeping your eyes fit with your most current prescription and the healthiest contact lens materials are your best bet.

1) I haven't seen a giant smoked sausage in the 9 lives of a cat. So my answer is zero. 2) Well, it really depends on how hard you're poked in the eye. If you're slamming that sausage into the eye, you'll probably kiss your vision away for a while if not forever. 3) Do you want to retrieve the eye juices or the sausage juices? I'm confused. Might as well get a mixture of both juices, so take a tiny sponge and gently soak all you can get from the eye, then squeeze out the sponge into your cat bowl or other appropriate receptacle.

I am 49 and very nearsighted. I started taking Ginkgo and Billberry and my vision seems to be improving. Check with your doctor before trying since you are much younger then me. You may be able to slow the progression or stop it altogether with these supplements.

I had similar concerns when I was your age. Do not worry, there are a lot of solutions now and you will be alright even if your vision gets significantly worse. By the time you get to be my age, who knows they may be able to make one from scratch.

Its hard to say what the worst it can get to
what does your Ophthalmologist say

son had terrible near sighted vision,
at age 25 got the Lasik surgery done to correct it to 20/20
unfortunately now at age 30 (after having it redone 1 more time) is back to wearing contacts for distance

Yes, eat plenty of greens and try to give your eyes a break from all the strain and labor.
