On Thanksgiving, our family allows our minor childern (12-17) to drink ONE small glass of family wine that has been in the basement of 3 years. (Every year each person says announces three things that they are Thankful for and then the whole table toasts and drink Cherry Wine). Is this family tradition illegal?

....And I know that I am not the only family that has this tradition b/c I know of friends who have simuliar traditions in there familiies!

QUESTIONS:

1. What are your thoughts on this 120 yr old tradition?
2. Do you have family traditions that are simuliar? Please share!!!!!

some states allow children to drink in the presence of a parent. if the child became intoxicated and was injured as a result of the intoxication, then it would be illegal. You will be fine.

Yes, a family is exempt from the laws in private places, as is a Jewish Synagog which lets 14 year olds drink wine.

I used to get souced at family parties since I was 10.

AND

KIDS in EUROPE drink WINE and BEER from the age of 5

ANYONE over 14 can be served BEER and WINE in Europe during daylight hours and anyone OVER 16 can be served ANY alcholic beverage ANY TIME day or night

It is Canada and America that is PURITANICAL

Both are 21 for booze

The REST of the WORLD is not

A 16 year old boy can go into a restaraunt in Mexico and drink BEER legally and have a 16 year old prostitute legally if he has the money to pay for it.

That's life, like it or not!

You can smoke Pot and Hashish legally in the Netherlands if you are over 18 in a cafe they sells it for $5 a gram.

You can pick a girl in the window to hve sex with if you are over 18

That is the WORLD, like it or not

A 16 year old can buy a beer in a bar in Germany anytime he wants to

If they are your children, in your home, then no. My family has similar traditions.

My great grandparents are all immigrants to this country, from cultures that served wine with dinner, and sometimes lunch. From the time any of us were old enough to want it, we were allowed to have a small glass of wine with dinner (we usually used a cordial glass) as long as we were not going out that night. The result of this was that none of my cousins, my sister or I ever "snuck" alcohol when we were teenagers. The mystery and taboo weren't there for us.

YEs it is wrong and is is immoral. First off, giving alcohol to minors is against the law. Thats only one thing tho. Alcohol is bad for your heatlh, why give that to a child? or to yourself even. God tells us that alcohol seems to be our friend, but its not, it is our enemy. Why would anyone want to drink it let alone give it to a child? It destroys the liver amongst other things. Why not just give them arsenic? No I am not suggesting that, of course not. I am sarcastically making a point here. Just use grape juice, and its good for you, not illegal and what we are supposed to do. Many things are long time traditions, doesnt make them right. How long has cannibalism gone on, and slavery still exists. Long time traditions, doesnt make it right.
Family traditions should be based on the word of God and doing things for each other that express love and acceptance. Not doing things that are against the law and harmful, no matter how long they have been in existance.
Devil been around a long long time, and nothing in him is good. Some traditions are good, and were always good, but some are mere tradtions that man brought in to serve self and should never have been and need to go now.
Alcohol destroys brain cells that you dont get back, besides what it does to the liver and metabolic system, etc.
List is endless. Ask anyone dying of alcoholism and ask how innocently it started, and what hell it took them thru to get where they are today. Not a pretty thing. Lets love our children and protect them, not hurt them, just so we can execuse our own drinking of alcohol. Shoot tootie there are ppl that even give drugs to their kids. Where does it all end. LEts get back to purity with God.

And do the kids become delinquent as a result?? Drunkeness is a moral issue, as all forms of abuse and excess are. But drinking wine is not a moral issue. Not unless Jesus and the apostles were immoral men.

You really ought to get your children into better wine than that, but I seriously doubt if you'll have any legal difficulties over serving small amounts of low-content alcohol in your own home under adult supervision.

After all, churches aren't hauled away for serving kids communion wine.
