It doesn't even matter if they were pitch black or purple; that's disrespectful period to God's house. They shouldn't have on any sunglasses sitting up in church. They should have been put away until after they got outside. I know it wasn't my church because they would have got called out. That's like wearing a hat in the sanctuary.

I could think of many reasons. Some are kinda pathetic, but some are valid.
*Hangover, trying to hide the bloodshot eyes.
*Maybe trying to just be "cool"
*Trying to hide them dozing off in church (can't see if eyes are shut).
*Maybe personal tragedy or family situation had them crying a lot before going into church, so hiding red, sobbing eyes.
*Maybe in an abusive relationship/family and person punched them in eye giving a black eye, trying to hide it.
*Maybe have a stye and are trying to conceal it.
*Maybe have a bad migraine in which light is very painful, so trying to keep some of the light away to tolerate still attending church.

He could be visually impaired. Sometimes light can hurt damaged eyes even inside. My son's eyes got scratched (long story) and the scars cause his eyes to be very sensitive to any kind of light. He is only 8 and its like having a blind child.

Why didn't you just ask the person that was wearing the sunglasses in church why they had them on? I agree with *honey B* said about it being disrespectful.

The reasons don't have to be nefarious.

Maybe that person likes them. Maybe he/she has an eye infection. Maybe he/she has been crying and doesn't want anyone to know. Maybe he/she has a black eye. maybe he/she wants to sleep during church.
Life is a mystery.
