Long term does mean chronic. A good example of the difference between "acute" which means short term and "chronic" which means long term is asthma. It is a chronic condition which means it won't ever go away but you can have acute flare ups such as a "temporary" asthma attack which you can get better from. By the way if someone has a chronic condition you don't necessarily die from it!

I was told that I had to take some tablets long term. I asked if that meant the rest of my life I was told yes. doctors often use these terms to hold out hope but chronic is not going to be cured, it may not actually be fatal and you may be able to carry on with your normal affairs long term -- see what I mean?

A chronic illness is something that will ultimately result in death- like cancer - a long term illness is something for which there is not short term cure but not life threatening- like M.E.
