How do you get a movie into imovie!!!!?

Question

I am trying to put a movie in imovie so I can cut scenes from it and stuff but I can't seem to get the movie to import into imovie does anyone know how? Is it an AVI format? If so how do you format it into that?

My iMovie HD imports AVI files perfectly, I just click on them in File > Import.

"I can't seem to get the movie to import into iMovie HD" - please re-post and explain what happens with error messages.
