i wasn't treated til i was about 39 yrs old. as i think back, i had always been depressed but i didn't know it. everyone thought i was just moody and emotional. i was referred to a good therapist by a friend who in turn referred me to a great doc. i was diagnosed with clinical depression and put on celexa. best thing i ever did. still have my bad days but i don't have that defeatest attitude anymore. i am now 46.

Hello! I found Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to be fantastic. After 15 years of severe anxiety, I am now a lot better. For anyone suffering from depression or anxiety, I would suggest the following steps:
1. Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.
2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for anxiety and depression. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear... It has been funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far.
3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resource...
I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!

The story of my descent into depression can be found on the web (Yahoo search) "The Last Temptation of George Petrie". I never believed it could happen to me. I started on medication (Prozac) and finally came out of it about two months later. I am now more successful than I have ever been and happier than I ever realized it was possible to be. I didn't know that I was depressed and probably had been all of my life to that point. best wishes

I had depression when i was 13(I'm 15 now). It got worse over the year. I started cutting at age 14. I got a therapy at that time. I started taking meds a couple month from now. I don't exactly recommend meds. For me therapy worked best.

2 years running. started wellbutrin 2 months ago. helps enormously with the depression, not so much with the anxiety. for that you just need to expose yourself slowly to your fears. your amygdala has been trained that way, you will need to reprogram it. no, seriously, look it up.
