What the hell can this be from?

The name for what you are describing is Crepitus. You likely have something going on in your left Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ). If you don't have any pain associated with it, and if you can open as widely as the next person, if your jaw will move to the right and to the left as far as the next person, then it may not be a problem. But you need to think about if this degenerates and worsens and one day you do have pain or limited ability to open or move your jaw. Talk to your dentist about it.

It could be TMJ syndrome - if you ever have other symptoms like locking jaw or pain. (Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ), the joint where the the lower jaw joins the temporal bone of the skull on each side) It would be wise to see a dentist or orthodontist, although a general practitioner could probably diagnose it. Sounds like TMJ does it also make a popping sound?

i had that same problem a couple months ago, but it eventually went away. hopefully yours will do the same thing

you really should see your dentist. could be tmj or something else.
