That is becoming more and more popular. I didn't want a diamond either. Every site I looked at I was drawn to blue topaz, but nothing really called out to me. I was shopping at of all places K-Mart and saw the most beautiful 3 stone blue topaz ring and it was on sale 75% off. I do not recommend looking at a jewelry store cuz you will pay a lot more. I later saw my exact same ring at a jewelry store for 3 times the original price where I got mine. If you have an idea of what stone you want then just google it, if not google gemstone rings and you'll find plenty of sites to choose from.

You could take a look around your local jewelry stores. Just go to any mall, and start looking. My favorite stone is blue topaz, and I picked a blue topaz ring as my engagement ring; I regularly get compliments on it. If the ring is tastefully designed, it won't look like "costume jewelry", no matter what the stone is.

I think it's great that you want something different and out of the ordinary. An engagement ring is about the promise that couples make to each other just like wedding rings. When my parents got engaged, my dad gave my mom his grandmother's ring that just so happened to be her birthstone (emerald). It's definitely not your average ring, but she still wears it after 28 years of marriage. Good luck!

My best recommendation is to shop at local vintage and/or antique stores. Often, you can find things that are different, because they were designed back in the day when jewelers weren't national chains, and each piece was individually made. Also, these often come at very reasonable prices.

My daughter & her fiance found her ring at an antique store. It's a lovely pearl ring, set in white gold, and it was quite inexpensive, as compared to its modern equivalent.

this is what i'm leaning towards for letting my boyfriend know i want...
there was another setting they had that has a small channel setting of diamonds with sapphires also channel set, the center stone is empty and i wanted to set in a brilliant cut white sapphire

the good thing is in this day and age you can choose anything for an engagement ring.

what about getting a ring with your birthstone and his birthstone (if the look good together), or with the birthstone of the month you are getting married? walmart has family rings that you can build on the website and make it however you want.

Just tell your bf those criteria, and let him choose something lovely for you! It's special if he does the choosing!
