I constantly itch my hands until the skin comes off and there is sometimes blood but not always, over the night the cut forms a scab so it is an actual cut. Is this a form of self harm, and if so am i really weird?!

Thank you.

You are not wierd, but it's not healthy either. Your hands touch a lot of things during the day and everything you touch has germs, which can get into the cuts on your hands caused by your itching.

Have you tried using lotions to cut down on the itching? You may need to talk to your doctor about this if you can't stop it on your own.

Well do your hands actually itch or are you doing it for the pleasure of making yourself bleed? If they are itchy then it's not weird that you do it. If so, you need to find out what is causing them to itch, it's probably some type of contact dermatitis (you're touching something you're allergic to). If that's the case a dermatologist can do tests that will tell you what's causing the itching. If you are just scratching them for the sake of hurting yourself, then it's a different story, and in that case, it would be a form a self-harm, and you need to stop.

It's not "self- harm" unless you are doing it for the purpose of harming yourself.

Self-harm satisfies a mental and emotional need.

It sounds as though what you have is an obssessive-compulsive disorder. This can be helped with certain medications and/or therapy.

UNLESS, of course, your hands ACTUALLY itch... in that case, you might have a physiological disorder -- such as skin eczema --- and that, too, can be helped by a physician.

In any case, I recommend seeking help, so that you do not cause any lasting damage to two of the most useful parts of your body: your hands.

Do you mean you scratch your hands? If it's because they're itchy - then you need some kind of anti itch cream to make them feel better. Try Cortisone or Benadryl cream.

If you mean that you scratch your hands, and they're not itchy, then you may have obsessive-compulsive disorder and need to see a psychiatrist.

Don't worry. You're not alone. A lot of people do this. But do get help.

It depends. Are you scratching your hands to hurt yourself, or are you scratching them because they itch, or is it just a habit?

If you are doing it with the intent of harming yourself, then you are self harming. Otherwise, it isn't healthy but it is not intentional. If you scratch your hands out of nervousness or anxiety you may want to see a therapist. If you are scratching your hands because they itch, then you need to see a doctor.
