To take this a step further...
Atheists/agnostics use evidence and facts, but do not have faith.
Religious people use evidence and facts (in their daily lives; we all do), but they have faith.
Since both groups are the same apart from the religious having faith, it is the religious who should truly understand the non-religious perspective and be compassionate. If there really is something to this "faith," they should be able to understand that the other side is the group that is suffering, not them.
I have seen both perspectives, as I am an ex-Christian who is now agnostic. I do not feel that there is much to this "faith" besides smoke and mirrors. However, if there is, there is NO justification for the religious to mistreat the non-religious.
Edit: The Christians who whine about being misunderstood and mistreated fail to understand that the "rights" that are being taken away are not "rights," but traditions that have existed because of a strong Christian background. To take away something does not mean it belonged to its owner.

i just want to put this out there. how come every other religion in the world is accepted. in school, in society....people who are muslims, hindus, whatever...they are all respected. except christians. it's true. im sorry if some so-called "christians" cram the bible down people's throats. i know that happens, but it also happens in every culture and religion in some way. don't label a whole religion based on some weird people. there are still some good christians out there who believe the same things people believed 2,000 years ago. i am proud to be a part of the oldest religion in the world.

Don't lump all Christians in the same boat...
Some Christians DO try to understand others beliefs and not every Christian crams the bible down throats...
I for one, am interested in other beliefs. I enjoy listening to others talk about them. I like to see our common ground. If the opputunity presents itself, then I share my religion. I do not bible thump.
I have learned you get more with sugar than with vinagar.
I am sorry you feel this way about all Christians. Apparently, some are not doing what Jesus would want them to do. And that is sad. For their transgressions, I appologise and ask for forgiveness.

1. Make a list of people who have crammed it down your throat.
2. As a Christian, I say, believe whatever you want. But you will be held accountable for your actions (according to the Bible).
3. As a Christian, I have studied, am studying, and teach about other faiths. I am VERY WELL informed. It all comes back to the resurrection of Jesus.

That's partly inherent in Christianity and many religions. You have to put on blinders to believe in only your religion so you don't allow yourself to respect other beliefs. Trust me, it's not just Christians that "cram their Holy Book down your throat" however.

There is a difference between understanding and truth.
I understand your frustration to a point, but only to the point where you can be understanding of where Christians are coming from.
Personally, I know more about other religions than most the members of my congregation. I live in a predominately Christian community and, in general, people are afraid of what they don't know. Instead of showing fear, they assert power and play the us and them game. None of it gets anyone anywhere in the end.
However, understanding does not discount the truth at all. That truth is Jesus.

I understand other beliefs and the only ones I fear are those that would do MINE in and those are MUSLIMS and ATHEISTS
I don't fear Hindus, Buddhists, Mormons. They have NO open agenda.
I'll openly celebrate Diwalli because NO Hindu has ever told me that their religion will replace mine down the line.
They are cool, strange but cool.
I don't get the fasting, I don't get the cow thing, but they let me eat at McDonalds
I kid this one Hindu girl who sometimes speaks to abstarctly and I'll say: You just said you're going to BBQ some steaks!
NO! She's say, my neighbors will be sad because it's raining and they can't BBQ!
I've had some Hindu bread with spinach.
I like Ravi Shankar.
But I don't like Tofu!

it is not a matter of understanding.
many christians are little more than religious zealots and bigots.
religion of any type is going to be futile anyway.
it is faith that provides strength, answers and salvation.
i can tell you all i want about my faith and the beliefs i hold and experiences i've been through on my journey of faith building, but when it comes right down to it, all i can be is an example. each and every person must find faith on their own.
some choose to follow religions, whether that be Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, Materialism, Environmentalism, whatever, and although they go through the motions and really believe in what they are doing, it is not by works but by faith alone that salvation can be had.
seek God and you shall be rewarded, as an individual of faith, not as a member of a religion.

Why must you generalize?
I'm a Christian.
I understand the beliefs of others and their right to them.
I've never tried to cram my faith - or my bible - down anyone's throat.
