Feedback is the response that given. It is a series of verbal, nonverbal cues that will tell you what the other person(s) feel about your conversation. Arm crossing, stance shifts, eye contact variation and tone of voice are all examples of feedback. Is your audience interested in what you are saying? Do they understand what you are saying?

This sounds like an academic question so I'll take that perspective...

In communication, feedback is the mechanism that allows communication from the receiver back to the the original source. The communication process starts with a source (the person that wants to communicate something)...the source encodes the message (turns his/her ideas into a message), transmits the message through a channel of some sort to a receiver that decodes the message (translates the message into meaning). Feedback allows the source to find out what the receiver heard!

A simple example...you want to ask a friend to dinner. You think of how you want to ask, and then call your friend and ask. Your friend hears your question and says yes (or no). That yes (or no) is feedback!

In marketing, feedback allows the company to find out if customers heard and understood marketing messages (e.g., advertising). For example, a company could do a survey asking people if they saw a recent TV ad...the results would provide feedback to the company re: the effectiveness of its ad campaign!

The problem with feedback in advertising is that it is usually indirect...it is tempting to look at sales and assume that increases in sales following an ad campaign were a result of the ad...but this may not be the case.

Feedback is what you get fromt eh person or people you are communicating with.

It can be what they say, how they say it. Whether they like it or not. Agree or disagree. Criticize or praise. It is all feedback.
