I was just wondering if it was proper. I had a brakelight out in my car earlier and had no clue that it was out until my brother noticed it.

I would have been grateful for someone honking at me and letting me know, but I was just wondering is it proper for someone to do that?

I don't think I'd honk at someone to tell them that, but if we both ended up at the same place, like in a parking lot, I'd probably say something. I don't think it's a question of it being "proper" or not, but I live in L.A., and I don't make a point of talking to strangers. You never know who's off their meds in this town.

It isn't a matter of being proper or not. You wouldn't have any idea why someone was honking and gesturing at you and it would be distracting. However, if someone pulls up next to you at a light and wants to tell you, fine.

I have told people that a light was out if I ended up stopping at a red light next to them and could get their attention.

Otherwise, just honking at a person makes you look like an *** if they don't know why you're honking.

I say it's a must do.

Do you Americans flash your lights (Say two flickers of main beam) at oncoming traffic if there is a cop with a speed gun along the road?
In UK, we all used to do it but I think because most ppl have some kinda speeding ticket (We have a points system, 3 points per ticket....12 and you're in court for a ban) that ppl are thinking, to hell with the other guy....he can have points too.

I am always willing to help out another motorist by letting them know. I normally don't honk to keep from distracting them from driving, but I do try to pull up beside them at a light, or will follow them into a parking lot. One time someone let me know I had a headlight out, so I try to return the goodwill.

Lol. Funny stuff. Even a Christian should like it I think any religious person could change a lightbulb, but uh, putting the bulb into the hole is the hardest part

Personally, I always tell a driver if they have a light out. In some states, it is a stoppable offense by police.

I was driving through Maryland one time with a tag-light out (I didn't know it) and the cop stopped me and gave my husband a ticket!

I had someone pull up beside me on the road and tell me my brake lights were out, and I appreciated it very much. I think it's not only proper and considerate, but safer as well.

honking the horn isn't nice but I would prefer to be told before a policeman books me.

Certainly! I know I would appreciate the gesture. Not enough people are just "nice" anymore, and we all should be. Be good to each other.
