Well, it is less than 20 days until my birthday and I want a tattoo around my birthday (doesn't have to be exactly on) but I leave for college in the middle of August. My friend who has a tattoo says that when you want a tattoo you have to tell the artist what you want then he draws it up and calls you in a week and you have to keep going back every week until he draws exactly what you want. This process (well she makes it seem) takes like a month. Is there any way that I could make an appointment and have an artist start this process now before I'm 18 and then actually tattoo me when I'm 18 or can I not even approach an artist until I'm old enough?

I am certain I want this, I've been thinking about it for at least a year and it's not a stupid design I picked off a wall. It's very personal and It's something I know I won't regret.

depends on the tattoo shop. If an artist is slow at drawing they can ask for longer. They could also be busy.

Tell them your time constraints, maybe they can work with you on that. But don't settle for a tattoo that is not perfect for you.

If you know you're going to get it after you turn 18, go see the artist now... since they are not actually working on you that day it doesnt matter if your underage. Start the process, and set the appointment for after your birthday, most places will ask for a deposit when they set the appointment and start the drawings anyways.

Different artists have different procedures. Some will allow you to show them what you want before you are 18 but they will require you to have a parent's permission before they start the tattoo, for legal purposes. But the bottom line is that there is no way that it should take that long for the tattoo process.

It does not always take that long. I walked into the shop that I go to and got my tattoo done then. My boyfriend had a hard one and it took them 2 days to draw it up, then he went in and they fixed it right then and there, and then did the tattoo. As long as you have a idea of what you want it will not take that long. Also the place I go to you cant walk into the doors unless your 18 or have a adult with you.

your friend may have worked with a custom artist or an artist that just wasn't good at getting things right. i have seen my custom tattoo artist draw up a tattoo in literally ten minutes that was perfect to put on somebody. he does it every day. the key is to get the right artist. you should be able to consult with an artist before you are 18 as long as you let them know that you aren't trying to get it before you turn 18.

You might as well wait until your birthday, as it's coming up soon enough. You may be able to walk in for now and look at the books, to find out what you want to get.

A month?! All of my tattoos were done (colour and all) on the same day I walked in. Though mine are fairly small compared to others.

i don't know about that....but the thing about tattoos...is that sooo many people regret it a few years down the road. i'm not saying don't do it....but make sure you still like the idea after 6 months or so...if this is just a new idea, i say wait a bit and see if you still want to do it later... and another thing. are you just doing this so when you go to college you can tell people you have a tattoo? make sure you're doing it for yourself, and not just to show other people. good luck!

It doesn't take that long. I met with my artist a week ago with exactly what I want so he can practice. I go in tomorrow and get it done. Approach the artist with a serious attitude aabout getting it and they can work with you on the age think (in a legal sense... waiting for your birthday). Just don't flake on them

I am not sure you gotta call up and talk to the tatoo guy/place.

yet I strongly suggest that you first tatoo your heart=worked for me=this is the best way to good laughter, fun and everwhat=see the lighter side of life, please!, and I am born Jewish

then again I am now kicked out of my synagogue because I am called a rebel, no not for my sins-they felt even if I was an atheist I am still Jewish, yet because I believed in hope and my Jewish scriptures-I am considered a traitor a rebel! Isaiah 9:6 "Unto us a child is born, a son is given, and he will be the mighty God and the prince of peace."

I wish the best for you and this was my breakthrough=when one realizes that Jesus unconditionally loves them
regardless of the torments of evil, problems, tests and trials, and tears through to smiles. May we realize that Jesus brings the
best in life to each of us every day, if we just open our spiritual
eyes=His mercies are new every morning, great is thy
faithfulness (Lamentations 3:21-26,. then a new beginning happens every day.
If you feel lost pray="Jesus help me, I am sorry for letting you down, forgive me and lift me up where I belong, come into my heart to stay, help me find your best way, amen." Revelation 1:1, & 3:19&20 spoken by Jesus from heaven "As many as I love, I rebuke and correct, turn quickly to me from sin. Behold I stand at your heart door and knock, if you hear my word and ask me in, I will come in and be your friend."

If we already had done that then its asking him to forgive and restore the joy of our salvation (Psalm 51)

Jesus understands us heart and soul, he is trustworthy,

have the best day ever, heads up and smiled, David tatoo heart to you

Nope, you can go in and give them your idea now. As long as they don't touch needle to skin before you're 18, they're still legally safe.

I only had to do 1 counciltation appointment. I gave them my idea and concept drawings, came back to get tattooed a week later, and we tweaked it a bit before.

Good luck! :D

You're friend is crazy. Usually you can go into most tat shops tell them exactly what you want and they can do your tat later that day or make an appointment for about three days in advance. It's a very simple and short process.
