Both, due to nearly every advance in technology has a sacrifice.
If you ever read the book or saw the movie "Inherit the Wind" (about the Scopes monkey trial) there is a speech made about this subject.
Some examples that I can remember are:
Telephone Gain: Ability to communicate with others
Loss: Privacy, other to get a hold of you
Airplane Gain: Ability to fly.
Loss: The wonder of watching a bird soar.
Television: Gain: Instant entertainment
Loss: This connection with the characters in a
well written book.
These are the ones I remember but there were others and is the only source that I can think of that makes a good argument for both sides of the issue.

I started to say technology is always helpful but then I had the thought of Nagaski and Heroshimi... was dropping the bombs helpful or harmful... I think there were estimates that something like 1 million U.S soldiers, marines and navy guys lives were saved by dropping the bomb. But I'm sure there are people that would argue that the bombs should not have been dropped anyways. This is somewhat of an extreme example.

here is a link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite

the luddites were against technology I think and broke machines to try to preserve their jobs... you might google luddites and see what you find.

I think the answer to your question is in the intent of the person using the technology. Consider a hammer, it is a very useful tool and I'm sure at one time it was "high tech". It drives nails which build houses and buildings which is very good. It could also crack a mans skull if used in a bad manner. It's helpful or harmful depending on the intended use.

Clearly with some tools it's clearly 50/50, or even higher, what about a heart monitor,,, I'd say that one is like 99/1 or even higher to the good. But other tools or uses of technology I think you could argue all day. I think your grade is going to depend on your logic and possibly your ability to substancate with your sources if your teacher is a stickler for sources... hope the luddite thing helps

It's not the technology but the Owner of it who matters most.
In wrong hands, it craets hell.
In right hands, it helps.

Tecnology is nothing knew. It was around b4 the written word. Fire being one of the first technologies discovered by the astrolopithicus (Its been a long time since my anthropolgy course so my spelling may be off), Stone tools are technology, the pen, berries ground up to use as a dye for paintings in caves. These are all tools and all tools fall under technology. If it wasn't for man's technology we would never have evolved or continue to evolve. Stagnancy mean death for us all! This is far broader than just the GPS or cars. Your paper would probably be much better if you addressed this.

It depends on how you use it. Here are some ways that it is helpful.
-It makes buying things so much faster
-Makes doing long division easier
-Helps people stay connected
-Keeps people updated on the world around them
-Helps people see what it's like in a different part of the world
-Makes traveling better

Here are some ways that it is harmful
-Could give people the wrong impression on something
-Makes it take FOREVER to be able to get through security at the Airport.

THERE ARE MANY MORE FOR BOTH BUT I DONT HAVE TIME TO STAY AT JUST ONE QUESTION FOR TOO LONG. SORRY, AND HAVE A NICE DAY!

Another question of relativity. The technology of space travel is good so far, but the technology of atomic explosion is very harmful, as in Japan in 1945. Depends upon its purpose and use, don't you see. Good day.

Technology is always harmful. It hurts the consumer wallet and especially our taxes. And, war technology hurts our wallet, taxes, and harmful to environment and our health. All technology is evil and created by Satan.

Just like anything else that is man-made, it depends on how it's used. If technological devices run you life, perhaps you need to reevaluate. Tools are tools, and it's all in how they are used.

It depends. It can be both. With all the advances we're making, I say we're doing more harm then good.

Ask the Neanderthals how harmful that their technology was for them.
Oh, that's right, they had no technology and now there are no Neanderthals.
