They can. One of my best friends is an athiest and I'm a christian. It's the immature christians who can't get along with atheists, and it's the immature athiests who can't get along with christians.

It's that simple.

Dear LuLu J,

i think that it takes a certain maturity to be able to respect someone's opinion even if you don't agree with it. And in a forum on religion- we know straight from the get go that fundamentally what Christians and Atheists believe are at extreme ends.

How things are said at times is more important than what is said. Christians ought to know their Bibles- which instructs them to be edifying and build people up- and to be careful with their tongues. James tells us that our tongues can either be a source of blessing or curse. Colossians says that the words of a Christian ought always to be spoken with graciousness. So i think as far as Christians they have to honor God by the way that they speak to others.

For Atheists- each individual has their own set of standards and so making a generalization is not fair. Some are polite and some are rude.

i think one thing we got to know is getting along does not always mean to people have to agree on everything. It just means that there are certain things that we can't walk together in. For example for the Christian Easter is a very big deal because it's the resurrection of Christ- for an atheist probably not as big of a deal- but that doesn't mean i can't grab a Starbucks with my Atheist friend- it just means we probably aren't going to church together...

Kindly.

lulu,

Actually I'm sure that most Christians and atheists get along with each other quite well. I have a couple of acquaintances who are atheists - I am a Catholic - and we have had some conservations about religion in general and Catholicism specifically. They were a bit 'heated' at times but our respect for each other helped to dispel any acrimony. I won't use that little anecdote to say that ALL atheists, ALL Christians, etc.. But it seems to me that people of good will accept other people whose beliefs do not coincide with their own. You and I hear the rants and raves but the agreements to 'live and let live' are rarely brought to our attention.

Because liars and believers just don't have anything in common. Atheists simply say that because they get attention from believers trying to convince them they are wrong. Look how many hang out in this section? Groupies.

By the way, our Lord had something clear to say about this:
2 Corinthians 6
14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15What harmony is there between Christ and Belial[a]? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

Because Christians feel the need to try and convert atheists or cast us in a bad light because we do not believe. If they would stop this, there would be no animosity, IMO.

I get along with theists of many different stripes just fine. I have wiccan, mormon, christian, and muslim friends and none of us have a problem with one another.

The significant factor being that none of us tries to convert one another.

I reserve my venom for the people who try to cast me in an "evil" light, and those who try to make their religious beliefs into the law of the land.

We Christians love atheists but hate their beliefs, and things could get controversial.

I get along fine with the half-dozen-or-so Christians that I know in real life. They are decent, normal people, not religious zealots or nutters like you sometimes see on TV in the US etc.

They most certainly can. It's the Fundamentalists that can't get along with anyone who is not like themselves, mostly because they're constantly trying to get them to convert, and people find that generally annoying.

Their is a deep rooted fear in Christians that their beliefs may not be factually accurate. As a defense mechanism of their bubble being popped, they lash out at others who don't agree with them. Aethists get sick and tired of Christians shoving their crap down their throat and lash out.
