Do you believe that it is possible to decent life in America, without having to mingle or make friends with any of the white or black Americans?

For instance a friend of mine says that since he arrived in the US 7 years back, he has never been able (or had the need) to mingle with any of the native white or black Americans. I mean, the company he works for (software firm) is full of Asians with a couple of whites at the top level whom he doesn't get to meet much at all. The grocery store he goes to is an Indian supermarket with only Indians there, he bought a car from a car dealer who is also an Indian. And last, all his neighbors are Indans with whom he mingles and goes for parties.

Well, I know it's kind of weird why one would not like to mingle with the locals over here, but hey - as long as you are able to lead a decent life, it doesn't really matter right?

Different cultures have different ways of approaching strangers. We have a very diverse culture in our neighborhood; Indians, Chinese, Brazilians, Koreans. Since someone has to take the initiative to start the social process moving, we elected ourselves to do this by creating a block party where everyone who chose to attend would bring some food item to share with others depicting their culture. Although the turnout was less than expected, some interaction occurred. I fear that our present economic and work-focused ethic has contributed as much to the lack of social intercourse as any other factor. When I was born, we lived in neighborhoods that were defined by our ethnic heritage, now we live in little cubicles for the greater part of our waking existence and don’t rely on socializing as the focus of defining who we are.

Some people just feel more comfortable mingling with their own culture. It gives them a taste of home. Some people feel that they don't understand the culture they are residing in well and therefore there are a lot of misunderstandings and that makes it stressful.

I am currently living in the U.K and a native South African. I experience it completely different and do not wish to mingle with people from my own culture because they act real weird when they live abroad like they are super cool or something, so I prefer to mingle with the locals instead.

Why would you find it so difficult to interact with other races? I personally love to find out about other cultures ,it's interesting and educational ,we learn a lot from all the people that are part of the USA or other countries in the world. After all even if the colour of our skin might be different we are created equal.
So I rather mingle with whomever I meet ! Who knows I might even learn another language!

I think some people just feel comfortable to relate to fellow countrymen, perhaps because of language, food, traditions, etc. Some immigrants do that to mask the feeling of being homesick, being away from your home country, and surrounding themselves with people and things from their home eases the loneliness. Its natural to seek what you have been accustomed to. I myself is in a foreign country, but I prefer to reach out to the locals because I learn more about the place and culture. Its my way to open myself to a completely new chapter in my life. I learn a lot everyday from the locals I meet and this enriches me as a person.

I am a firm believer in total assimilation. There is no reason for immigrants to cluster as if they are forming their own country again. This is the United States after all not the united provinces of whatever!

Well then why come to America? If you want to surround yourself ONLY with people who are just like you, wouldn't it be easier to stay where you are? And they say white people are racist?????? I have friends and family members from every race, religion, background etc. but because I am a white American girl, I get called racist. Things have become so backwards in this country of immigrants. People move here for the "American Dream" and then want nothing to do with Americans. If you do not want to assimilate into American Culture, then don't move here.

Human interaction is always important....Race should not be a deciding factor in anything. Race is simply who we are biologically. I am an immigrant myself and race is not important in any of my decisions in life. I have other issues to stress about.

i have mostly latino friends because were i live thats the majority..
but i had white and black friends at school because there was a mix there.

well that could be possible, But why would you only want to hang out with your own race? He should talk and hang out with other races as well.
