They take on cases where the Bill of Rights is either being ignored or violated in some way. That means that sometimes they take on some veryu unpopular cases.

They have represented Nazis, Christian groups, Democrats, Republicans, atheists, Muslims, and other people from all over the political spectrum. For some reason, the Religious Right only seems to remember the cases when the ACLU was against them and casually forgets the times when the ACLU defended their rights.

Member here. Some of what you hear about the ACLU is lies. Some conservatives insist that they never defend Christians, and that's not true. They took the case of a man who was denied unemployment benefits because he would not work on a Sunday. In another case, they defended the right of a religious group to make use of a school auditorium (not during school hours) because other community groups got to use it.

Yes, they do defend the free speech rights of unpopular groups sometimes, because it applies to everyone.

I definitely believe it's called for. I actually tense up when I hear people use a deity's name in public. After a couple of seconds, I'm glad because I'm glad people (at least Christians) are bold enough to call out God or Jesus, but I know it can be an issue.

I know everybody's not going to agree with my faith so I don't want to force it. I believe I and any other Christian have the right to voice our opinions and faith, but the moment anybody oversteps those bounds, I think the ACLU needs to step in. Other Christians may not agree with me, but that's how I feel.

So, as of right now, my opinion is that I think it's called for. They don't have the right to stop my voicing my opinion, but they do have the right to watch how far I go with it. At least, I feel this way.

They're a little over the top.

But I suppose they have to be to combat the lunatics they go after.

The funny thing is, Christians hate them because they represent everything that Christianity despises, such as equality, peace, and tolerance. But when Christianity dies out in a couple generations, I bet you'll see the Christians depending on the ACLU to fight for their rights, after the majority turns against them.

Edit - Look at Lazarus' response if you want to understand why we need the ACLU... :)

They are the scum that pagans evolved from. They hate America. God has some terrible surprises for them in the end. Just as you cannot be a Democrat and a Christian, you cannot be in favor of the ACLU value structure and a Christian. they are the sinful nature, Christianity is the spirit.
"For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the spirit, and the spirit what is contrary to sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other so that you do not do what you want."

I asked a question about this the other day.

I'm an atheist, and I think the majority of the time the ACLU has good intentions, but some of their cases border on absurd and have hints of "too much free time, let's sue just for the hell of it".

The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 by Roger Baldwin, a communist sympathizer and self-avowed soldier of socialism. Baldwin wrote, "I am for socialism, disarmament and ultimately abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control by those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal."

The California Senate Fact Finding Committee on Un-American activities stated, "The ACLU may be definitely classified as a communist front or transmission belt organization."

The ACLU has used its legal skills to attack religion in general and Christianity in particular. According to them, traditional moral values no longer have a place in the curriculum because they are based on religion, thus denying freedom of religious expression - a basic American right.
They also militantly oppose tax exempt status for churches, military and prison chaplains, and the words, "In God We Trust" on our currency and "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance among other things.

A primary goal of communism is to eliminate all religion which doesn't conform to state religion. The correlation between the ACLU's anti-religious activities and their communist founder is obvious.

No American who truly loves his country should support the ACLU or any of its activities.

EDIT: I SEE SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE TO SEE THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ACLU IN HERE. YOU WILL WAKE UP WHEN THEY ARE DONE STRIPPING THE CHRISTIANS OF THEIR RIGHTS AND THEN START ON YOU.

No, no, democrats vs. republicans is a lot worse. Ever been to the politics section? Yikes. And there are continually gonna be boastful human beings here attempting to shove their ideals down your throat. in case you do in contrast to you will possibly wanna attempt yet another section or some thing, on the grounds it somewhat is particularly lots what this finished section is committed to.

Atheist here.

It never ceases to HORRIFY me how many people consider standing up for the defining document of the United States of America is anti-American.

How can that possibly be so?

Are the anti-Americans those who would violate the Constitution?

Although not a card-carrying member, I do support their work.
