We drown the worms because they're too small to shoot....and because they deserve it.

I`m quite sure that are very few anglers that impale a worm on a hook and pitch it in the water just to experience its drowning. In fact I doubt anyone gives it as much as a second thought.
The fascination is in what the little wriggler will attract.

"Drowning worms" as you call it is very productive way of harvesting fresh fish. Fish are a very good source of proteins and vitamins like B-complex, which are critical factors for energy production and often referred to as 'brain food'. I personally find no fascination in drowning worms per se unless they are of the artificial variety. These require some skill to be utilized in their application of harvesting said fresh fish. Once you've done it successfully you too might become 'hooked on fishing'.

its not so much the drowning of the worm that i find fascinating, its cutting them up that i like, either with a single snip,or with my multi bladed worm scissors that cuts them into about 10 pieces in one go.another favourite trick of mine is when the fish are feeding on the surface,i syringe air into them to make them float.the nearest thing to worm genocide would be when i put a few handfuls through an old mincer so i can add them to my groundbait

I'm with lesm..it is more fun when your worm is to big to stab with a nice number 3 eagle claw, and you have to pinch or better yet RIP him into smaller pieces...hehehe..nothing like worm slime and poo all over your fingers when you got an itch on your face....
