Please talk a little about it here, or direct me to a good site to explain the verses if you can.

No wiki type entries please. I do know how to find wikipedia. Looking for someone personally familiar with the text.

It is truly difficult to find a scripture in any religion whatever, that is so concise and so profound...you may want to check out Maharishi Mahesh's explanation of the first six verses of the Bhagavad-Gita, which I found pretty good, actually. If you are looking for a good translation, the Juan Mascaro translation by Penguin Books is excellent. Some are so wound up in poetic language that they are all but incomprehensible. Oh and if you can find a copy of the Mahabharata, it is a GREAT story...it is like the Iliad and the Odyssey of India. The only thing might be that some of the customs and premises are a little oblique...Indian values are much different from ours. but once I had read it, I understood many famous Indian stories and legends much better.

The Bhagavad Gita, which translates as "The Song of the Lord" is a part of a larger epic story called the Mahabharata (which is a legendary story about a civil war in India in some protohistoric or prehistoric time--the whole thing is a legend). The author is said to be "Vyasa"--but, like most Hindu scriptures, the real author is unknown.

The Bhagavad Gita itself is an inspirational dialogue between a warrior named Arjuna and his charioteer and friend, Krishna, who, in the story, is an incarnation of the Hindu deity Vishnu, who has come to help Arjuna. Arjuna does not want to engage in the war but Krishna tells him that it is his duty to fight because he is a warrior and then goes on to tell Arjuna philosophical and mystical truths about life and death and morality, etc.

The Bhagavad Gita touches on basic Hindu ideas about reincarnation, how and why God incarnates, the afterlife, the traits and fates of good and bad people, the nature of God, and about what one's attitude in life and attitude toward God should be. The story should be regarded as inspirational and metaphorical teaching that some mystic thought up, not as an historical event. It should be read in context as something worthwhile that came out of India 2700 or so years ago and not as something that "threatens" fundamentalist Christianity or whatever.

Easily readable versions of the BG are out there. You can check a Vedanta Society Web site or Google around. I'm sure plenty of stuff with show up.

Bhagvad Gita is the root text of Krishnaism know for its beatiful verse and profound content. Generally, it outlines the all-incompassing Nature of the Eternal Brahman equating it with Krishna - the playful shepard incarnation of Vishnu, the preserver. Mantra Om TAT SAT mentioned in the text is an incantation that means something like I AM GOOD, or I AM IT.

I don't know the song, but I can tell you that the Baghavad Gita is a book about a little blue god that seduces shepherd girls and steals. That kind of God I can do without.
