I phoned the dentist and was told it was normal and to contact him tomorrow if it has not abated. It has not. Why is this and what can the dentist do about it? The pain is nearly as bad as the abcess that brought about this treatment in the first place.

I really would not say this is normal. To me what is normal is either no pain or a mild discomfort if pressure is put on the tooth.
If there is considerable pain then I would say these are your most likely possibilities;
1)filling is high
2)infection under tooth, so should consider taking an antibiotic. Were painkillers prescribed for you?
3)if the root canal was simply started and not finished, perhaps not all the nerve was taken out of the tooth
4)the dentist had the endodontic files out the tip of the tooth into the surrounding tissue and chewed them up a bit
5)if the endodontic filling was short or long in the canal, or if the tooth was perforated or if an instrument broke in the canal (the dentist would likely have informed you if any of these had occurred, but can not assume that for certain....ask the dentist).

Did they give you painkillers? Root canal can hurt like heck for a couple of days. Or it could be they left an exposed nerve , or the abscess is still there.
If the doctor doesn't seem concerned about your pain, it's time for a new dr.

yeah it is normal I had a root canal before and its because they actually open up your tooth and clean out the infection. Didnt they give you any pain medication? It doesnt make sense for them not to. If they didnt you need to ask them to.

HEATHER,
OFTEN TIMES WHEN THERE IS A PREVIOUS INFECTION FROM AN ABSCESS, IT CAN TAKE 2-3 DAYS FOR THE ANTIBIOTIC TO BECOME EFFECTIVE AND START TO BRING DOWN THE INFECTION.
TAKE 3-4 ADVIL TO HELP DECREASE THE OVERALL INFLAMMATION. THIS WILL ALSO HELP WITH THE PAIN.
