No one could survive a fall from the height using one, you would die without an oxygen supply long before you hit the ground.

Just getting to a door will be a tough task in a plane thats going down or spinning , also if you do manage to get to a door there will be a danger that you'll get rammed against the wings or sucked into the engines as soon as you jump out , and if you do manage to get out of the plane and for some miracle miss all the dangerous stuff, if you pull the ripcord the parachute will rip you appart so it wouldnt really be a good way to go, planes nowadays go way too fast and an out of control airliner well it would be better if there was a parachute (or parachutes) installed on the plane so in case of an emergency say a wing comes off (l know doesnt happen often) or an engine or some sort of failure, the pilot could send a distress call and deploy the parachute so that the impact wouldnt be so hard

The airliners don't for the same reason the Titanic didn't have life/save boats.
But small airplanes must have at least one kind of parachute (saving life parachute) and in some cases two kinds -saving life parachute and "saving plane parachute"- a very big parachute witch is opened when the engine fails and there's no place to land. It opens and the airplane safely touches the ground.

Depends on which plane, Sadie. Military planes have parachutes for the pilots -who are trained to use them.
But for everyone else, think about this: Except for military pilots who are blasted from their planes on an ejection seat, the plane has to be flown just right to let people jump out. You can't do that if the plane is in trouble. Also, parachuting takes skill and practice. Most passengers don't have that. Parachutes are bulky. Where would you put them on the plane -and still have room for people and luggage? It takes a long time to put on a parachute properly and make all the adjustments. By the time everybody was ready to jump, the plane would have crashed anyway. People would not wear a bulky and hot parachute for an entire flight, either.
I hope this answers your question.

Its actually becoming a popular thing now a days in General Aviation (cessna, piper, cirrus). BPS (ballistic parachute systems) they're called. I beleive they employ a rocket like micro system that shoots a parachute when the airplane enters an uncontrollable flight attitue. Like an upside down spin descending fast. They are also a very expensive system. Most companies offer it as an OPTION. Like adding leather seats to your car. Cirrus Designs has airplanes that have proven to be have very effective and safe PARACHUTES, people have gone down in their airplanes uner a round parachute. Its a hard FALL but you survive it. Hope this helps

commercial jets don't have parachutes because parachutes need a some training to work right, and in the 1970's, some loony held an airplane hostage, got 10,000 dollars, then jumped out the door. That inspired a whole bunch of copycats. Now, the doors are modified so it is hard to safely jump out of one.

Most aircraft accidents occur at altitude where parachute cannot work anyway (too low for opening, accident on take-off or landing; or too high for someone to bail out and survive in the low air pressure and freezing temperature).
Aircraft accident also occur too quickly for anyone to be able to make it to a door and jump, and that is assuming that a passenger would know how to use a parachute. Have you seen how little attention people give to the safety speech at the beginning of the flight? Now imagine them teaching how to use a parachute, where to get it from, how to don it, how to proceed to the door (and which door? Most of them are in close proximity to airframe component, jump out and you'd hit the tail,. the wing or an engine...) and how to deploy it?

As stated above, some airplanes do but it is an expense that alot of owners and operator dont want. It is not required and in many cases having them on board will not make a difference. Most airplanes are not designed for people to jump out.

Hi, I am airline pilot from Mexico. Have been flying for more than 25 years. Interesting question..... planes are so safe ( more people die riding bycicles than flying in airplanes ) that there's no need for parachutes. Floating devices are more important... that's why the seat's cushion is your floating device. At the speeds and altitudes an airlplane flies, parachutes are obsolete. Not any crew member has one... we wouldn't be able to use it in any emergency. Hope this answers your question.

You must be new to yahoo answers because that same question has been asked many times.
I could tell you many reason but the answer really boils down to this: A person must be highly trained to parachute out of an aircraft.

Because as a general rule, they are very safe and parachuting needs practice , however certrain aircrew flying 3rd world routes for 3rd world airlines do actually insist on having parachutes for their use. but not for their passengers and Military aircraft are maintained by military personell to military standards and so have a high crash probability. hence they need parachutes.
