There was this guy carrying a jar of peanut butter, and he walked by a guy carrying a jar of jelly, and they crashed into each other, and one said, "You got jelly in my peanut butter!" And the other said, "You got peanut butter in my jelly!" And then they licked it off each other and the rest is history.

A Brief History of PB and J sandwich

Food historians have seen nothing written about the peanut butter and jelly sandwich before 1940. What we do know is that GI's in WW 2 were given rations of both peanut butter and jelly. When they returned to the states after the war peanut butter sales and jelly sales both soared. It would seem most likely this would be the birth of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Peanut butter in the US really didn't take off till the end of WWII, prior to that, peanut butter was mainly used as a food supplement by/for those who couldn't chew regular food, and was used as a way to get protein and some vitamins into patients that had no other source of nutrition.......Things like Ensure (a liquid supplement) weren't around then.....but until the homogenization process changed the industry, peanut butter had to be stirred to reincorporate the oil that had naturally separated to the top of the product (think organic peanut butters). At any rate, lucky for those of us who had to tote our lunches to school, I am gonna try and estimate the number of PB&J that I've eaten in my life........hmmmmmm where's that calculator???? Have a PB&J for me today!!! Enjoy!!
