I don't think the people on the streets, the beggars, are necessarily fake. They may be druggies or drunks, though, so I never give them money. But I do carry around a box of cereal in my car. When they say they're hungry, there's something easy to eat & nutritious. If I have no cereal, and I have the time, I tell the person to stay right there, I'll be back in a minute. I go to McDonald's and get a meal, and sometimes I put money on a McDonald's card so that he has meals, say, for a whole day.
Your aunt donates her time to charities over the internet every day? I'd like to know where this can be done. E-mail debvillareal@yahoo.com. I'm a very community service conscious person, but I'm also confined at home sometimes. It would be great if I could volunteer during those times, because it would lift my spirits.

If the Red Cross and Salvation Army published the percentage of collected monies that go to the needy vs. the amount that goes into the operating budget, I might consider it. However, I've seen too many organized charities that only get 5-15% of collected monies to the people in need.
Okay, I found the Annual reports for both organizations, I still think 50% in operating expenses is too much and prefer to donate to my local charities.

No, ours has got very picky. They want to go through everything while I stand there and wait and only take what they think is 'the best'. Today they left a $50 smartwatch in the bin because they thought it was a toy. It is only a few weeks old - I just didn't like it. I saw what they were leaving - antique laquer jewelry box "too dusty" ...that watch, new pack of CDWR, and I told them to put it all back in the truck and left. I will donate my items to a family that likes to run yardsales or something.

There is a very large book which unfortunately Ican't remember the name of it but it tells the % of every dollar for each place you donate to that goes to the actual cause. It is startling how very little of each dollar is used for the prupose. Some of he major places have the least amount going to the charities. Very many as little as 2or 3 %. It certainly made me be very reluctant to what charity I supported. Million and million of dollars go to the construction of the buildings themselves while little goes to why they constructed the building in the first place. Wouldn't the money be better well spent on the research? and who cares about the building and what it looks like. That would be my question!!!

We also need to get those organizations aware of things They can now do in the 21st Century. Many charities are seeking donations in a 19th Century way when technology does have it's capabilities that not all charities are taking advantage of.
For example, my neice and I go to this one charity for children through their Google site which allows for everytime we go through it for a donation to be given to them.
Those working with the charities need to take advantage of technology and get informed on how they can in a sense help themselves to better funding which is out there and not always that difficult to obtain.
I say put down the black kettles, white buckets, phone calls and look at technology. Rather than asking for a fish, the staff of these charities needs to upgrade their methods of fishing.

Non-profit and social service agencies need to do a better job with measuring and publicizing outcomes. People need to feel that their donation will be an investment in the good of others.
