Fighting international poverty club?Project ideas?
I want to start a club at my high school that focuses on international poverty and relations. I really want to 'adopt a school/orphanage'. By having the ability to send supplies directly to that particular establishment. Do you a way that I can do that? Or do have any other project ideas?

That is a great idea. My advice is as follows:

1. Outline your goals. Are they monthly or quarterly donations and to whom? (ex. adopt an orphanage) Make them realistic, this way you do not get discouraged.

2. Plan fundraisers like school dances, bake sales, car wash, door-to-door sales and awareness.

3. Ask for donations from local business such as Restaurants, bakeries, Grocery Stores, etc. Door-to-door donations are great also. It would be wise to ask for certificates for free stuff which you could raffle off.

4. Clothing, personal hygiene products, canned food and cash are good donations to make.

5. Make sure that foreign Customs will allow you export your donations to that orphanage in that county. Remember it takes money to do this. This is where you ask your elected officials for help.

6. This is a lot of work so gather as many people who share your ideals and goals.

Hope it has been helpful.

That sounds like an awesome idea. A few years ago my church adopted an orphanage in Ukraine- we did this after a group from our church went to teach the people English. They made a connection with the orphanage and were able to send them financial support on a monthly basis.
You could check in with worldvision.com- they have numerous ways to send help- you could raise money to dig a well, buy people farm animals, get kids school supplies et cetera, all sorts of other stuff. They help people in all areas of the world, including the U.S.A.
I would suggest getting in touch with a world relief organization, or a local human service organization like that though and see what ways you would be able to help support the people; and/ or you could e-mail one of the coordinators from there for more information or ideas on what you would be able to do. Good luck

Make sure you sponsor something that people in your area are and will be passionate about will want to support in the coming years

By letting people in your community know that you want to do this and by researching the topic. You want to adopt a school. First, pick an area then pick and contact a school. Find out what they need and how to get it there. Then go back to your community and say "I am Pearl the girl and I'm raising funds to send these things to this orphange. According to the headmaster they have 400 children who need..."

Just lay out the facts and tell people what you want to do to help. The key here is to do the legwork and set up the supply line prior to asking people to fund the idea.

Good luck getting the idea off of the ground.

The main goal is to raise awareness for both your club and your cause, start with a website, announcements and flyer's or posters to gather interest for your club . To get supplies for an orphanage/shelter you need to do a lot of legwork by calling numerous restaurants, bakery's, delicatessens and asking for donations of their excess (i personally know that delis and bagel shops would love for someone to take away their daily extra bread) and also asking supermarkets, convenience stores and pharmacy's for there unreturnable overstock or damaged products including shampoo, toothpaste, soap clothing etc. . Starting a high school club of this nature is a great idea; while it is a lot of work it is rewarding for both the members and the community

This is a great cause and idea. First, I would find out if your school would be interested in this club/organization. If they are, you can work from there. Now, sending supplies over seas can be tough. However in the country, I would presume shipping would be a little bit easier. It also may be tough to find and organization, but I think that many organizations do accept donations. This is a good idea and good luck with it.

Well, how sweet are you! Maybe you could ask the school to have a dance or some other special occasion. To enter or join in on the fun, the students have to donate money, food (like soup cans for example), clothes, or toys, (all of which have to be in good condition), to a certain organization that you want to help out. Hope this helps...

I think that's great! I know towns have what they call a "sister city" they help. Problem is....this can turn into a real fiasco and tons of red tape to do it legally. Maybe joining forces with someone like Oprah or another figure would be a way to go. I know they have a project to send school supplies to the middle-east......unfortunatly I can't remember the guys name.....starred in Forrest Gump.....anyway.....they are out there. Good luck and I wish you well!!!!!

There are "famous people" who share your feelings. I know they get tons of fan mail and such but I also know they love to hear from people who want to do something.....instead of get something. Doesn't hurt to try.

Raise money and spend it on promoting capitalism in areas where poverty reigns deep. Capitalism creates more wealth and prosperity then any other system - of course don't tell any liberals that - they will hate you for not creating a government program.

Get businesses to donate free stuff to you in exchange for publicity.
