take it to the vet and let him see what's wrong with it first then deal with the cost if it really is sick.

This is my area of expertise!
First of all, you don't need to take your rat to the vet!
What you need to do is look in the yellow pages for pet and feed store to call and ask if they carry Terramyacin. The bag will cost you from $8.00 to $12.00 and holds a lot! In fact, it will be enough for any of your other pets, or friend's pets, that get sick.
Terramyacin is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is used for poultry and swine by ranchers. However, it is perfectly fine for your rat. I used to breed dwarf hamsters, budgies, finches, quail, chickens, cockatiels, etc. and that is what I used.
If you do buy it, all you will need to put in your rat's water is the teeniest pinch, and I mean teeny tiny. Change your rat's water every day and continue adding the antibiotic until three weeks have passed.
I hope this works! The sooner you get it, the better! If your parent happens to have some left over antibiotics which are in capsule form and not expired, you can use that by opening up the capsules and adding a teeny tiny pinch as described above!
******************* Don't pay any attention to those jerks who are criticizing you. Plus, there is no reason to take a $4.00 rat to the vet and have to pay $80.00 for the visit when what I've told you to do will work just fine!

Wow PickieChickie you must be some sort of super hero. Vets spend years studying physiology to be able to diagnose illness and prescribe the correct medication but apparently you can do it without even seeing the animal. Amazing! You learn something new every day. Now I know that terramycin cures all known illnesses in rats. Super!
In answer to the OP, it would be impossible for any normal human being to tell you how much it will cost to treat your rat. You do need to take it to the vet for a proper diagnosis and proper prescribed treatment.

First of all, you need a lesson in grammar! Your question should read, "I need to know"
Anyways, in order to get antibiotics you must take your rat for a vet visit to pin point the rats medical problem. Then he or she will prescribe meds that are appropriate for the diagnosis.

Usually antibodies run about $15 to $30 depends on what kind they need. If it all possible I'd go with anything that is given oral through syringe.
