God speaks.
After all, He has given us His word.
But then unless He gives revelation you wouldn't know.
When you know Him then you can hear Him.
Yes He does speak individually and answer, and it is true you have to discern that. But we are enabled by the Holy Spirit Who is given to those who obey Him. Otherwise we would all be equally dead.

God talk to you all the time....It is the feeling in the pit of your stomach when u know/are convinced that this situation is right or you KNOW you should have/have not done this or that; It's what makes the hairs at the back of your neck rise and goosebumps appear even on the warmest of days. As for prayers being answered, well they are always answered, your part of the deal is to stay wide awake, to be aware of life around you so you can recognise the answer given to you. You only need ask once and know that is is being done, so all you have to do is say thank You. Why are you an atheist? Because you've never seen God? I bet you believe a Billion £ exists....Have you ever seen it though? Wish you all the best in your search...

Your not an atheist your an agnostic, look the term up. I don't believe communication with God in the way your thinking off would actually make you feel anymore reassured. Many religious people communicate with God but not in a literal way.
They don't sit down and have a couple of beers talking about why there here and have a laugh how on the fifth day God came up with that "Skinless cat thing".
religion is a form of faith. I have faith my friend, but you need to find your own much like I did.

Most of the time we worry about silly little things and it is only when you pray or meditate can you focus on the situation and you soon realise there are solutions to your problem.
God has given us the skills and resources to sort out most of our problem.
Some problems are there to help us learn and grow from them so Gods not going to make them go away, even if it means the loss of a loved one.
I have found the only time God gets involved is when you are at a complete loss, even then he just nudges you in the right direction or opens a door for you to walk through. He expects us to learn, grow and develop as a person, we can't do that if he intervenes.
The thing he is really good at is listening. You know you can pour your heart and soul out to him and he will never judge you, even if it is something trivial, he will still listen to you. And I know he is there, it defiantly isn't my mind, or I would have zapped myself long ago!
But in another way it is your mind, as he is part of you, but he is also distinctly separate. It's hard to explain, you just have to do it.

God speaks! You just have to know His voice. The Bible says, "His sheep know his voice" so those of us that are His, know His voice. Sometimes we don't listen, but He does speak. His voice is not a voice in your head, that's your own thoughts or voice. We hear His voice in our spirit and through the Word of God, the Bible and many other ways. Prayer is a calming process because we know He hears and we know He will answer. I have not heard God speak with my physical ears, maybe others have, but I do believe if He wants to He will and does. His "still small voice" does speak loud in my spirit when He wants to make sure I hear Him over my own "noise" or activity. It's hard to explain to someone that is not born again and has become one of His sheep (saved, accepted Jesus as the Son of God as their personal Lord and Savior) but I have done the best I know how to try to explain it. YES, God is real and He DOES speak! I've heard Him!...many times!

As a born again christian i can say that i have heard form God the latest being last saturday.
You must not think hearing from God as a deep voice in the clouds as He has loads of ways to communicate with us. He uses people filled with his spirit, newspapers , radio , a friend or a brother in christ to convey His messages to us.
Prayers a simply talking with God as He loves listening to us and can't wait to help us in our problems. However you need accept him as your father by accepting his son Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour. It takes a lot of faith to beleive that there is no God !

As a Christian I find this difficult. If i heard voices I would need attention. Are prayers answered? yes but not always in the way we would wish for which thanks must be given. Prayer is not a shopping list and I think it must be remembered, " Not my will but Thine"
Perhaps we should only pray for the strength to carry out God's will

there was a time when i prayed & only had faith that God would hear me & i could feel the peace of His Spirit. then one day last year i was outside walking & praying. there was no wind at all.... it was very, very still. i noticed the trees & every leaf was still.
then all of a sudden, the wind blew & in this wind i literally HEARD God's voice speak to me. i accurately heard His words & His voice. it was the voice of a man.
after He spoke, the wind stopped & didn't blow any more.
i knew this had been a supernatural experience with my God.
it wasn't scary at all. it seemed perfectly normal at the time. afterward, i was amazed at what had happened.
it's funny, as i was reading the OT yesterday, i read where God spoke to the people in a whirlwind.
i now have renewed & a strength about my faith b/c i KNOW He speaks to us & i know that He hears.

Please listen to carefully.
No disrespect intended - but I suspect you are haunted by ghost.
Ghosts are subtle bodies - they take control of a person and the person hears does strange things eg hears voices etc. Because ghosts can not drink /eat in their subtle bodies of mind , intelligence, ego they are furstrated and haunt others so they can satisfy their desires thru them.
If you speak to medical man they usually send these sort of people to mental institution. Or get them hooked on tablets.
Some other symptoms of those who are under this "hear voice in the head" they drool, not very clean living, sleep too much, intoxication, drugs. Usually these people say God is speaking to them to do things. Judge your own symptoms here.
Now I have studied many books of knowledge. Here is the simple remedy: Chant the Hare Krsna Mantra loud audible to yourself and hear the sound vibration and push out other thought from your mind. Do not eat meat, fish, eggs.
Please chant: HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA, KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE, HARE RAMA HARE RAMA, RAMA RAMA HARE HARE,
As much as possible.
This issues is not about converting to another faith etc - if something works you take it. Medicine you do not ask if it is coming from black, white, brown doctor - if it works you take it - simple as that.
You can try it for 2 months -if it does not work what is the loss? I did not ask for money. This mantra is powerful and has been used in ancient times. I do not say you go join some commune - no! I say you chant.
Best Wishes

You may get mixed reviews on this one. But hopefully they will be nice to you.
As you are an atheist, unless or until you invite God into your heart, and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and do it with a pure heart, you may never experience this.
It's not a clear voice that sounds like something described in the mind of a schizophrenic, which commands that you do something.
The voice of God is gentle. It cannot happen overnight to most. Such a spiritual experience could be Lucifer, if you have left yourself open to being deceived.
God is of peace, love, grace, all things that are lovely. Confusion is out of the picture, with Him.
As for prayer, it's not like yoga. When I talk to God in prayer, I feel his presence sometimes. Worries do not vanish. God does not protect all of us from harm, because we have free will. Given my personal will, I choose to ask God to come into my life, and direct me in all aspects of my life. I do ask for guidance and protection. But if it is not in accordance with His will, or I'm not following His will, I may not be completely protected from ill health and the like.
I am a believing Christian, and I did hear God talk to me once, when I spent 13 hours in hard labor, after that, delivering a stillborn daughter. I had a chance to look at my baby when the doctor asked. I quickly asked God if I should, and in a sort of "nano" second (so-to-speak), it was not a voice, but rather a thought in return that said if I wanted to go to heaven now, I could see her. In that same second, I told God I wanted to stay, (for reasons I won't explain here). --- Shortly after that, I did not know it, but passed out because I was bleeding profusely. Had to get a blood transfusion. The doctor told my mother I almost died. --- That's when I knew God had truly spoken to me.
Kiddo, when you believe and trust in a Heavenly Father, you just know. You just simply "KNOW" when God speaks to your heart.
May God bless you in your search for answers for yourself.

You hit it on the head.
Prayer is either a calming process, or a way for someone to get their thoughts together.
A ' real christian' generally won't ask God for anything other than 'bless my family, etc' frivolously - and will only do so only as a last resort. They will pick their words carefully, and determine exactly what it is that they need.
By doing that, they have allowed themselves to focus on the problem - which is the first step to finding a solution.
I don't think God 'talks to them', if they do hear a voice, it is simply themselves thinking.
Once you stop worrying about a problem, and start looking for solutions, it is amazing how quickly you can arrive at one.
