Do they all work in roughly the same way ? I bought some frontline spot on today and i have just applied it to my kitten. Are there any products that prevent the fleas from jumping on?

I bought Frontline spot on yesterday. Someone said it kills the fleas once they have bitten the cat this is incorrect. It kills the fleas within 24 hours of coming into contact with the skin, that's what it says on the leaflet.

They don't work in quite the same way - they're all different drugs. Frontline only acts on the skin, it spreads throughout the skin via the skin's natural oils. The drug in Frontline is fipronil.

Stronghold works systemically, so it also kills tapeworms, which are transmitted by fleas. The drug is selamectin.

Not so familiar with Advantage - I think it's more similar to Frontline in that it kills fleas and I think, works only on the skin. I think Imidacloprid is the ingredient of Advantage.

They're all excellent products - kind of the Big Three of the flea-treatment world - but it depends on what you want as to which is best for you. Stronghold soaks in a lot better than Frontline, and also kills tapeworms - but my personal favourite is Frontline Combo because you only have to use it every 6 weeks instead of monthly, and it treats the environment as well.

With these products, the flea has to bite the animal to die, which is part of the reason you need to spray your house as well, so there aren't any fleas to jump on! If you've used regular Frontline, you need to spray your house as well - Indorex, Acclaim and Staykil are all good sprays that are available at vets. You always need to spray your house to get rid of fleas, although after one spray, treating with Frontline Combo should mean you don't have to spray anymore.

I have used both Frontline and Advantage. They are both great. I used Advantage when my dog had pups because it gives an "umbrella" effect and works on the pups without actually being put on them ( my vet's description) At the moment I'm using Frontline in a pump bottle because the vet worked it out and it's cheaper for me ( when I'm treating 2 GSD's and 13 cats) than using Advantage.
Best way to stop them jumping on is to get some household spray and treat the carpets and soft furnishings at the same time as you treat your cat.

I think they all work in a similar way. I use frontline for my kittens and flea collars for the older cats and that works just fine for me.

frontline will kill the fleas as soon as they jump on the cat and bite it. frontline works it way into the blood of the cat and when a flea bites the cat it will die within 24 hours.
