She wears a ring as a sign of her commitment ot abstinence from sex until marriage. The school said the ring fell outside its uniform policy, which makes exceptions for Muslims wearing head scarves and Sikhs wearing steel bracelets. She's going to court because she said it violates her religious freedom.

Opinions anyone?

API did not go into details. Perhaps someone from UK has more info. I worded exactly as printed. Could be just a ring on her finger.

No exceptions should, in my opinion, be made from dress codes on religious grounds. Religion is not some kind of trump card to get you out of the rules others must obey, and a dress code is not needed to believe in god.

However, in this case the school does make an exception for all religions, and allows crosses for Christians - the accepted symbol. This girl was openly using the ring to force a moral value on other in the school that there is no reason they should share, and is in breach of their human rights.

The decision was right. School is not a place for moral indoctrination, whoever it is done by. And policies should be - and were - scrupulously fair.

If she had been any other religion wearing a ring not required her by her religion (say, a Jewish girl wearing the ring) she would have gotten suspended too since it's not required by religion. If jewelry is against the uniform policy, jewelry is against the policy. Hijabs and steel bracelets aren't jewelry, they are religious items required by that particular faith. She can take the ring off before school and put it back on after school without having a problem. It's not violating her religious freedom, she's just upset she has to follow rules.

Chastity belt or chastity ring? If the school has a policy that is violated, then she should not do it. Who needs a ring to remind her of their morals? Making exceptions for Muslims is not good, but muslim head scarves is more of a religious requirement than a ring.

Do you even know what a chastity belt is? Its a medieval device that men made their wives and daughters wear before they went off to fight in the crusades. Its a girdle that she can't get out of unless she has the key.

A ring is not a chastity belt.

There is nothing wrong with a child or teenager wearing a ring to school, in my opinion, unless all rings are against the school dress code. If rings are against the dress code, which, in my opinion would be unjust, she can either take off the ring, or change schools, or be home schooled.

I dont think a chastity belt is a good idea. What the point in restricting a girl from a normal human act? As long as the girl is knowledgeable of SAFE sex and knows when she ovulates and uses protection, who is to say she cant have free will? no one is. its controlling and i cant believe someone thought it was a good idea in the first place.

Where did she wear the ring? A chastity belt generally is not visible in polite society and the only way a ring could function as one is if it linked together lips that her principal has no business inspecting.

Um... A ring isn't a 'chastity belt' and her religion doesn't tell her to wear a ring - that is her choice.

If the school says 'no jewelry' then she needs to follow their rules.

If the court finds otherwise - then I want to be able to wear a chicken suit to work because I believe God is a chicken.

Isn't a ring on her finger a little bit different than a Chastity Belt? I mean seriously, you lure me into this question with such controversial phrasing, and all I find is a flipping ring? How disappointing.

Yea, outrageous, travesty of justice or whatever.

Deport her to the bible belt in the US. She isn't even at the school anymore as well, just doing it for the sake of it. Wasting everyone's time.
